Sounds crazy but we were in Argentina visiting family, way outside the city in a gaucho middle of nowhere town and they have a gas station/restaurant. It was a buffet of the most delicious snacks of meats/cheeses/stuff I don't even know what it was , then an a Parilla full of the works, and then desserts. Glass bottle sodas, cafe con leche....its an entire experience that takes multiple hours to complete!

mmmm I'm hungry now!

@junebugmama: I figured it would come with a hefty price tag but it sounds soooo worth it! Maybe we'll go there for our 20th wedding anniversary or something! Haha

@Mrs. Hopscotch: we are so low brow and non-foodies! As much as I enjoyed the "experience" of Alinea and was amazed at the creativeness of the food... it wasn't really food I would want to eat again! I prefer good comfort food over fancy food... But at least that makes me a cheap date! ;) with the exception of sushi.

Best meal ever, hands down was on our honeymoon. At this small restaurant overlooking the Italian Riviera in Manarola, Cinque Terre, Italy. The seafood was so fresh you know it was caught fresh that morning. Being Asian and lived in NYC all my life I know fresh seafood but that was just a whole 'nother level of freshness. The house wine was so awesome which is saying a lot bc I'm super picky with my wine!
We can't wait to go back just for that restaurant.

@junebugmama: WOW! That sounds amazingly decadent!!!

I think the fanciest meal at a resturaunt that I've had was at Morton's in Chicago, we dropped a lot of cash that night but it was so delicious! Honestly though? The best meal I've ever had was eggs benedict cooked by my MIL. DH's family are cattle ranchers (well, were at the time, after the divorce they sold the ranch) and she makes her EB with tenderloin that she roasts with a blend of Penzey's spices and makes her own hollandaise sauce. It's not the traditional ham EB but you wouldn't ever miss the ham... Holy hell it's unbelievable. I told DH one time that his mom's cooking is what keeps me around ;)

@Sammyfab: You can eat all you want of the cart goodies. The way the restaurant works is you choose how many corses you want for a flat price. The minimum you can have is 4, so the carts plus a main entree. Hubs and I did 6 courses to include an app and dessert. The meal was $700 :/

@junebugmama: omg your best meal ever sounds heavenly. Dd you get to pick as much bread, cheese, and dessert as you wanted or did you have to pay for each little dish (like dim sum)? Wow...I'm drooling.

Our best meal ever that we still talk about 7 years later was at Tapas (a tapas restaurant obviously) in Canmore, Alberta. It was our first introduction to tapas and we've been hooked ever since!

This tiny Argentinian restaurant in Costa Rica. OMG it was good. There were only 5 tables in the open air gazebo in the middle of the rainforest. Super romantic. We had the best guacamole, steak, seasoned potatoes....seriously. We talk about that meal all the time!!

Catalina Country Club, they had revolving chefs that flew in at the time and I had the special of the day. It was huge tiger prawns gorgeously arranged and a baked Granny Smith apple for dessert. I don't even remember what I ordered as appetizer because those two dishes were so mind blowing! The chef even came out to the table but I'm kicking myself for not remembering his name!

Sheraton San Diego at a family friend's debutante ball. The food was glorious! It was nicer than any wedding I went to and it was just an 18 yr old's birthday party.

i've had maybe a few meals that have been so good, i've teared up. like they make me wonder why more food/meals can't taste as good.

anyway, the first one that comes to mind was lunch at asador etxebarri in basque country, about an hour drive from san sebastian. each course (different types of seafood and some meat) was simply grilled over charcoal and topped with salt, but each was SOOOO good. and the view just outside our window was breathtaking.

@junebugmama: that fried chicken looks awesome!

Best meal I ever had was in Toronto. It wasn't anything as great looking or sounding as Sage Fried Chicken but I had just spent a week in Cuba and the food was not great--I think we lost weight on that trip. When we got back to Toronto I had the best Shopsy's hot dog with sauerkraut and mustard...then we walked a couple of blocks down to a restaurant where I had an eating contest with myself and had 2 pints, buffalo wings, a hamburger, and french fries.

It was heaven.

Best meal was probably in a small town called el calafate in Argentina. The restaurant was called la tablita. We had just finished a 5 day hike and was very tired of eating camping food. It was the first time we had lamb made the Argentinian way over an open fire pit. There were other types of meat too but the lamb really stood out because I don't normally like lamb. We had the meal with a nice bottle of Malbec. It was glorious. That was our most favorite trip thus far.

The best thing I ever ate is different than the best meal I ever had...so I will talk about both!

The best thing I ever ate was at Hash House-a-go-go. They have locations in Vegas, San Diego, and Chicago. If you are in this are or visiting one this is the place to go for breakfast. It's one of the first restaurants to have a farm to table concept. The food is amazing, relatively inexpensive and the portions are huge. The thing to order is the Andy's Sage Fried Chicken Farm Benedict -w/ fresh spinach, hardwood smoked bacon, market tomato, griddled mozzarella, chipotle cream and scrambled eggs over home fries it could easily feed 2. Here's a pic!

[attach=1372/12/md7ef7.444x600.169718_1579153837098_2108506_o.jpg]

Now the best meal I ever had was at Joel Robuchon in Vegas. Joel was named Chef of the Century and my husband and I knew that this would be a once in a lifetime experience. The bread course alone featured 35 different bread choices wheeled over on a cart and then heated by your personal dinner concierge. Each table has it's own wait staff and there are 2 sommelier's, one for wine and one for the bubbly. The cheese course was also wheeled over and featured 42 choices as well. The concierge had all of them memorized and could tell you where each came from, the milk used, age, etc. It is not cheap obviously, but we knew what we were getting ourselves into. Our entrees were amazing and looked like works of art. Then they wheeled over the final cart which included tiny little desserts to choose from.

That is way too hard of a question! I can't hurt the feelings of the multitudes of wonderful meals by picking a winner.

But honestly, one of the best? I was in London. I had missed my flight, I was stranded there overnight. I was freezing cold, and it started raining. I had no money for a hotel, I had been traveling for days, and I hadn't eaten in more than 20 hours. It was about 4AM.

I walked into a McDonald's and ordered a BBQ veggie burger (which I really wish they had at American mcdonalds), fries, a coffee, and a milkshake. Yes coffee and a milkshake. I like to mix them together.
I then walked a couple blocks to Buckingham Palace, plopped down on a patch of grass near the front gate, and ate my glorious meal in peace. It was magical, and I almost cried.

And then the sprinklers came on.

True story.

This is a hard question because I have a terrible memory! One that stands out is on our honeymoon 5 years ago in Maui at Mama's Fish House. Crispy Khalua duck & fish in panang curry, and the most amazing dessert.

And last year in Florence, we had the best (not to mention biggest and most expensive) steak of our lives, at Ciro & Sons.
