I know as a giver, I don't mind knowing it's too small. As a receiver, I don't think I'd go out of my way to tell them it was too small though. I'd let them know if they brought it up. Unless, I needed a gift receipt or to know where they got it.

I wouldnt tell them its too small, I would exchange it myself or regift it, because it would be wasted if I dont use it

I agree with PPs. If you know or can find out where it came from, try to exchange it. If that doesn't work, I let the gift giver know; however, it doesn't sound like that would work with your MIL. In which case, her gift will unfortunately not be able to be used.

I like honeybears idea of finding out where they're from so you can do it yourself. Normally I think it's fine to tell someone.... but in this situation it seems like their family just doesn't do that for some reason? I know I'd want my gift to be used and not just sit in the closet so I'd rather someone tell me.

If I know where the gift came from, I just go exchange it for the proper size myself. If I don't, I sometimes ask the giver where she got that lovely X, because my friend asked so she could get an X too. :)

LO got a really cute pair of wool booties from MIL, but I didn't realize the size until we got home - they're too small! They're roomy but won't fit right even now. Thing is, DH seems hesitant to say anything. He used to always get shirts from her that didn't fit and I always wondered how/why she's never known about it ... until now! She got me a nice pair of wool slippers, I was thrilled; until I realized they don't fit! I tried telling her they were a little tight (it was during Christmas) and she cut me off saying they'll stretch. Ehh, they're really too small. Argh, they're really nice too!

Do we tell her about LO's booties? Would you? I don't know why it's so difficult to say something. Is it a gift exchange faux pas that I don't know about?

Would you say something when a gift doesn't fit?
