As a receiver, I don't think I'd go out of my way to tell them it was too small though. I'd let them know if they brought it up. If you know or can find out where it came from, try to exchange it. If that doesn't work, I let the gift giver know; however, it doesn't sound like that would work with your MIL. Normally I think it's fine to tell someone.... but in this situation it seems like their family just doesn't do that for some reason? They're roomy but won't fit right even now. Thing is, DH seems hesitant to say anything. He used to always get shirts from her that didn't fit and I always wondered how/why she's never known about it ... until now! She got me a nice pair of wool slippers, I was thrilled; until I realized they don't fit! I tried telling her they were a little tight (it was during Christmas) and she cut me off saying they'll stretch. Ehh, they're really too small.
