I know there are several alcoholics on Dh's side and I've heard it "runs in the family" but I don't know for sure. I honestly haven't worried about it just yet. Good question. I did hear on the news this past week that eating junk food during pregnancy increases the odds of addictive behavior in the baby (which is not good for my kids.) I don't know how strong the correlation was or if one causes the other, though.

There's a book called "How to Raise a Drug Free Kid" based on evidence. Many of the suggestions can be used for other addictions as well.

@bluestriped bee: We have pretty extreme cases of addiction on both sides of the family and this is something I think about a lot. My HB presence is pretty public among people I know so I don't want to go into detail but we can chat privately if you want. <3

@ms.line: I'm so sorry about your FIL. So sad.

There is definitely different types of addiction (gambling, drug abuse, alcoholism) on one side of our LO's family. Though, the other family might have a mild case and may or maynot be inherited.

Alcoholism runs in both sides of my family. My grandparents were alcoholics and my brother battles drug and alcohol addiction and has since he was about 18. Our parents were very open with us about these tendencies, and that we needed to watch for them and take them seriously. They also fostered healthy drinking habits, to help stem abuse from both addict and non-addict behavior.

My father-in-law died of alcoholism at age 46. My MIL and BIL also are alcoholics. I definitely worry about preparing my LO for the potential of severe addiction. An interesting blog post - thank you for sharing.

Not sure if this belongs in the Chronic health board. Feel free to move it, if it's not appropriate.

Does your LO have family on one or both sides that have struggled with addiction?

I do and I worry about what things I can do to see the signs in my LOs. It will be a long time away but I think it will always be on my mind.

A friend of mine posted this blog. I thought it was a good read.
