I got one underwire from Motherhood, one Basic from Target, and a handful of sleeper bras. Since we don't live near a Target or a Motherhood, I got them before he was born. Mine ended up fitting (still do!) so I'm glad I got them. But fitting pre-baby is a complete crapshoot so if I didn't have a distance issue I would probably have gotten them after. Definitely get some sleeper ones beforehand because you'll want them at the hospital/immediately after your milk comes in to help stop the leaking. I suggest the basic bravado (target brand-- 20 bucks). You can wait on an underwire after you figure out your optimal size. Scribble wouldn't nurse while I had an underwire on for the longest time so most of the time I had to strip down to nurse him anyway! Fortunately I am usually nursing either at home or at someone else's home where that isn't a problem. Now he is ok with nursing while I am wearing an underwire bra but I am an expert at disrobing easily so sometimes I just wear a normal one anyway! I was wearing a normal bra a few days ago when I had to nurse him on the beach....I just shimmied it off and then went to a changing room to put it back on after he was done.

I bought my nursing bras about 4w after DS was born. I went back and was resized when he was about 5m and found I had gone up a cup size.

I bought one sleep nursing bra before LO was born maybe a month before. The rest I bought after LO was born. I have one underwire one from Motherhood and the rest are Basic from Target.

I ordered mine from Target and Bare Necessities, the latter of which seems to be really generous with coupon codes. I've been getting a promotional email every other day from them since I placed my order. They definitely had more selection in underwire styles than wire-free...does this mean that most women wear underwire nursing bras with no problems, I wonder? The nurse who taught the breastfeeding class I took at the hospital really put the fear of God in us about underwires, so I'm uncertain too!

@Bookworm: Haha, I still care how they look ;)

@hilsy85: Cool! That's good to know! I'm not too worried right now but I definitely will want to wear one sometime in the next year or so!

DEFINITELY wait to buy nursing bras until after baby is born and after your milk comes in and engorgement settles down (around 6-8wks). My boobs went from 32DD during pregnancy to huge porn star boobs, and then back down to 34DD. In the meantime, I wore cheap target nursing tanks and bras. As for nicer bras, I really like Elle Macpherson nursing bras.

Also, re: underwire @JerricaBenton: you can wear underwire nursing bras as long as they fit properly, and as long as you're not wearing them for 24 hours straight or overnight or anything.

@JerricaBenton: I've been wondering this too! My girls do not fare well without underwire; I've been wearing them as long as I can remember! Maybe I won't worry as much about how they look when I'm busy with feeding baby... but still, I've been very curious about that...

I just bought stretchy cheap ones from Target. They are fine. I'm mostly wearing sports bras though. I bought 4 or 5 bras before LO was born but I kept the tags on the ones with hooks to make sure they fit after my milk came in. Maybe I'm in the minority, but my boobs are pretty much the same size. They are pretty big anyway and other than those first few swollen days, they look and feel the same to me.

Slight threadjack but I just thought of it...are you all really not going to wear underwire until after you're done breastfeeding? I can't imagine being comfortable not wearing one when I'm trying to look nice. I've been wearing an underwire since 5th grade! LOL Is it just the kind of thing you test out and see if you get clogged ducts or do people really not wear them at all?

I bought the clip down bra from motherhood while pregnant. I was in my late first tri and didn't want anything with a cup because I knew I'd grow. I'm still wearing it 5 weeks pp. it's stretch and comfy and supportive, cheap, and adjustable.

Oh and I bought Bravado bras. They are so comfy but not so good looking... I have one cheapo I bought from Target that has underwire that I wear from time to time. It's not really comfortable, though so I leave it in the drawer most of the time.

My Mom bought me two sleep bras from Target when I came home and they were the best things ever!! I stopped wearing them for a while and recently pulled them out. Now I wonder why I ever stopped wearing them. :)

With #1 I bought some from Gap, but they don't carry them anymore. I got them right before he was born and they fit well until 7-8mo then they were too big. This time around, I needed a new one (LO is due in May) from Motherhood, but I really hope that I will fit back into my Gap ones soon. I like that they snap in center and pull over, rather than have to pull down like most. Don't get too many until your milk comes and normalizes would be my suggestion.

I wore the Gap Support Cami through pregnancy and while nursing, they were perfectly stretchy just 'pulled-down' rather than having to clip/hook. (I still wore them after I was done too, they kept their shape fantastically)

My lactation consultant told me (once the baby was here) that she wished all women would wait to buy nursing bras until after they have the baby. She said your width shrinks and your boobs (normally) grow after the baby is here so, it's better to wait until your milk comes in to buy them. I have one nursing bra that is a waste now because it is too wide and the cups are too small.

I bought two Medela bras (on that was just a sports bra with no support and one full on nursing bra in a bigger size the wk before i went into labor. I also bought a nursing tank from target. I used 20% off coupons on the nursing bras so they were a decent price.

I haven't bought another since. I rotate the nursing bras with regular preg bras.

I'm hoping that I will be successful at BF-ing, and today I was thinking about my boobs (which are already enormous, there's no avoiding thinking about them because BAM, there they are...), which led me to thinking about nursing bras! Where have you ladies found reasonably priced (30-40$ and under, preferably) nursing bras, and when did you buy them? Did you wait til your milk came in to see what size you were, or buy some ahead of time? Any particular brands seem better quality-wise?
