Interesting how many people went cold turkey and had success and others were successful with slowly weaning

@winniebee: That sounds like you designed a great schedule for transitioning to a sippy cup. Thanks for sharing your details.

@edelweiss: DS sometimes has the same reaction to sippy cups as your LO did: he'd rather chew on/play with it.

@whodat: Thanks for sharing your recommendation. I'm looking to buy new sippy cups, so maybe I'll give those a try.

@septmomma12: Glad to hear cold turkey worked from bottle to sippy cup. Sorry though that your LO isn't responding well to drinking milk from a sippy cup!

@dolphin: I figure DS will give up bottles when he's ready, too. Our pedi isn't concerned, so I'm not either.

We transitioned right after he turned a year old, but he was introduced to the straw cup at 6m old for tiny sips of water.

First we got rid of the day time bottle, then the morning, and we just got rid of the nighttime one. He didn't care at all.

we tried introducing a sippy cup while LO was still on bottles, but he was more interested in chewing on in than drinking from it. we then introduced a straw cup, and while it was a little better, he was only taking a few sips. then we went cold turkey and he got the hang of it. i remember a turning point where one time he woke up really thirsty, and we offered him the straw cup and he just started gulping (he was pretty thirsty, i guess because the room had been warm) and since then he felt comfortable drinking lots from a straw cup.

We went cold turkey during the day at 12 months. I thought it would be rough because he LOVED his bottles, but honestly he didn't even seem to notice. He never liked holding his own bottle for some reason, so I think he kinda liked the independence of the sippy cup. We kept up the nightime bottle until 15 months (for purely selfish reasons, like @2PeasinaPod said) and then dropped that cold turkey as well.

We're trying now though to switch him from sippy cups to straw cups and he absolutely refuses to drink milk from a straw cup. Won't even try it. It makes no sense because he's been drinking water from a straw cup since 8 months...I told my husband this is what we get for having such an easy bottle transition!

We started out using the sippy cups with soft silicone spouts, basically the same as bottles, and that transitioned him to the regular sippy cups.

I liked these: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Avent-Classic-Bottle-Trainer/dp/B003ZUXBBC/ref=pd_sim_ba_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0Y1QRW4X7C42NR4P8GFG

DS is 17 months and still has his before bed bottle. We need to wean it, but it's just so nice to have that time with him. It's totally a selfish thing.

However, he still will not take milk from a sippy. We've tried different cups, making it warm...nothing works. He does love cheese and yogurt, so we load him up on that while still trying to offer WCM in a sippy at meals. His last bottle will go before he turns 18 months.

Following! DD is 14 .5 months and still drinks WCM in a bottle. I tried giving her milk in other cups (open cup, sippy cup, straw cup) but she refuses even though she drinks water from a straw cup just fine. Honestly, I'm not too worried about it. She will give it up when she is ready. I just continue to offer her milk in bottle AND milk in a straw cup during meals. This past week she started drinking more milk in her straw cup! As she drinks more from a straw cup I'm going to get rid of a bottle one at a time.

I knew that the gradual approach wouldn't work with DS so we went cold turkey right around 12 mo. It was rough and for the first few weeks, he didn't drink much milk out of the straw cups but we kept offering and he caught on. We made sure to give him plenty of cheese and yogurt to ensure that he was getting his calcium needs met

At 14 months we got rid of a bottle a week. First the morning wake up bottle. Then the morning nap bottle. Then the afternoon nap bottle. We just offered him a sippy of milk instead at the time he would have gotten a bottle, plus worth meals. He was down to a bed time bottle by 15 months and we finally got rid of that one by 18. It was much easier than I had anticipated.

DS is 14 months and still uses a bottle for WCM. He uses a sippy cup for water, but is really messy with it, so I haven't tried WCM in a sippy cup yet. But I'm just curious, when and how did you transition from a bottle to a sippy cup/regular cup?
