@erinbaderin: we kept in a sleep sack for a long time, till just after 2 (still in crib) I think it helped prevent him from being able to escape the crib too!! He actually has a favorite blanket now that he started asking to sleep with over the summer so he uses that in his big bed, and I tuck it in on the sides to help keep him covered while he rolls around.

I don't remember when we switched to a blanket. I do remember that I started off with just a thin receiving blanket, and when I realised he did fine with that I put a crib sized quilt that my mom made him in there and he loves it. He's 2.5 now.

@My Only Sunshine: I am sorry, but I totally chuckled at "my toes! my toes!". I can picture it, and although I'm sure it's frustrating, it sounds hilarious!

@PurplePeony: This times a million.

My daughter is newly 2 and if we try to put footed PJs on her she'll pull at the toes and cry "My toes, my toes!" with full-on real tears. She'll also refuse to walk while wearing them. No amount of explaining or distracting or bribing solves the problem. So she sleeps with a blanket too!

We got a toddler sized fleece blanket that she's been sleeping with since she was 23 months. Sometimes it stays on top of her, sometimes it ends up snuggled up next to her. Either way, I think it keeps her kind of cozy.

If she would still wear a sleep sack, I would totally put her in one. The blanket is our "better than nothing" solution.

OMG, how do you all have such compliant toddlers? DD used to like the sleepsack but one day decided she was done with it and now if I manage to get it on her, she'll stand there screaming "off! off! OFF!" and pulling at it until the fabric cuts into the back of her neck and leaves nasty red marks. And if we try to put her in footed sleepers, she screams "no zip! NO ZIP!" Basically, she will only wear the plain old two-piece cotton jammies and they just aren't warm enough. I don't like giving in to her antics but she will actually hurt herself trying to get the offending sleepsacks/jammies off, so we don't have much choice. I'm so jealous...

I posted something similar to this a few days ago, and I think we are going to stick with a sleep sack this winter. As it got cooler we have been putting him in a lightweight one and he doesn't seem to mind too much.

In my research I came across this, I don't think I'll get it but it is pretty funny! http://www.ergopouch.com/ergopouch-3-5-tog-sleepsuit-bag.html

Both my kids were in fleece footed sleepers until about age 4 - they wouldn't keep blankets on at night at all and it gets really cold in their bedrooms in the winter time.

My plan (let's see if this works lol) is to keep my LO in a sleep sack through this winter (she uses A&A ones now, but I'll move her to fleece when it gets cold). Next spring when it gets warm she will just be turning 2, and I think I'll take her out of a sleep sack and give her an a&a blanket in her crib for the summer, then that next winter when she is 2.5 she'll get a legit blanket (and possibly also a toddler bed).

I make sure they are wearing warm PJs so that even if the blanket does come off, they are still warm. We started both of our LOs with AA dream blankets. I feel like the dream blankets are thick enough that they don't really get tangled and twisted like thinner blankets tend to do.

DS is 2 (and a size 4T) but we are sticking with a sleepsack this winter again. Right now he has a sleepsack and a small light blanket. He likes the blanket but when it falls off no biggie. We won't switch to just blankets until he's in a big bed.

We didn't switch to a blanket til he was 2.5, and he outgrew his largest sleep sack. We went through a looong period of it falling off him and him calling us to come put it back on. It was really annoying! I kind of wish we had just kept him in a sleep sack (and looked for a bigger one). But he is also now in a toddler bed, so we had to get a regular blanket. We just got a large one so even if he rolls around it stays on.

My DD is 21 months and we have been having the same problem. She refuses to wear a sleep sack so I ended up buying a toddler bed sized duvet. It's stiffer than a blanket so it kind of "floats" on top of her even if she rolls around, as long as she doesn't thrash too much. Even if she kicks it partway off during the night, she's still been waking up nice and toasty so it seems like it's working. I do have to sneak in and put it over her after she falls asleep, though -- I'm lucky she doesn't usually wake up. This wouldn't have been my first choice option, I'd much rather her still be in sleepsacks or even warm footed pjs, but she is VERY opinionated and that just wasn't going to happen without daily screaming bedtime battles.

I'm trying to decide whether to buy a sleep sack for my son (20 months) for the coming winter, or what. I think we should. My husband keeps talking about getting him used to sleeping with blankets. I have no idea how or when to go about that, but now seems too soon, because he a) still stands up at the rail of his crib crying for a minute before he lays down to sleep and b) rolls all over the crib. The few times we've tried to put a blanket over him (away for the weekend, colder nights than anticipated) he's ended up tangled up in it and crying in the middle of the night. Can anybody share with me when they introduced a blanket at night, and how they went about it?
