For me, since I had lots of braxton hicks and false labor ahead of labor, I had to go by intensity. I had timeable BH contractions for weeks that meant nothing. So for me, I didn't start timing them until they were quite strong. At that point they were about 8-10 minutes apart.

I started timing when I noticed they kept happening. With LO2 I started timing just to remind myself how to use the contraction timer app I downloaded. Turned out I was in labor and they were 12 min apart. I timed four contractions or so and then didn't time again until I was 4 minutes apart.

Definitely frequency, and it doesn't have to be even. I.e. They don't have to be exactly 2 minutes part. It can vary and if they start to get closer in frequency...the it's probably time to call your OB/MW!

I started timing them as soon as I noticed them. With both babies, they were so mild that I only noticed if I really concentrated on them, but straight away, they were regular (14 min apart with my first, 20 min apart with my second). They never went away, just gradually got stronger and closer together and eventually I was in proper labour. DD1 was born about 32 hours after the very first super mild contractions started, DD2 was born 10 hours after the start of the mild, well spaced out contractions.

Is it when they are strong enough or when they are frequent enough? When do you start timing your contractions?
