He has been doing this for a few months now at 2.5. Our house is pretty open though so I can hear almost everything and check frequently.

I've been able to leave my DD alone to play since around 18 months. She doesn't really try to get into anything most times. I can hear her from the other level and check on her every 15 minutes or so. There's just not a lot she can get into to begin with.

DS has been doing this since 2. We had a camera though. And at 2, he wasn't by himself for very long but now at nearly 3 he's developed a really good attention span for independent play!

Our playroom is on our main level but out of site from me. I let her play in there by herself as often as she wants. If it were downstairs is probably put a video monitor in.

Right around the same age - just over three years old. DD1 has a lot of toys in her bedroom so she likes to go up there and play, especially as her small toys that she can't have around little sister are mainly stored up there. Her bedroom is upstairs and the main playroom is on the ground floor - I'm fine with her being up there on her own though. I go up and check on her every so often (maybe every fifteen minutes if I can hear her from downstairs, more frequently if she's particularly quiet), but at nearly 3.5 yrs old, I feel reasonably confident she doesn't require constant supervision anymore....

@looch: oh that's a great idea, esp to re-purpose the baby monitor when they're older!

We have a camera in our lower level playroom exactly for this reason. It's also great when we have family over with older kids, we can just check quickly when it gets too quiet.

We have a playroom set up in our basement, an area that is just for the girls, where they can go that is just theirs. DD is just over 3 years old and we have started letting her go down there by herself to play without one of us with her constantly. We check on her frequently though. When did you feel comfortable letting your child play by themselves on another level of the home?
