@irene: this is why I get a fake tree!

I have tried real trees in the past, but the air tends to be so dry (forced air heat) that no matter what we did, the tree would be so dry and crackly.

I did read that you might have more luck in keeping the needles on if you put in karo syrup, bleach and epsom salts in the water...you can find tons of stuff online about it.

@irene: Or something. We live on 52 acres, we do pasture some cattle, but it's not exactly a farm. Still lots of space to explore though.

@irene: An inch is fine and normal, so don't worry! That's what we did too. I think as long as your tree IS drinking, you're probably fine. Just keep monitoring it. :)

@Adira: Yes I did..... but bearly an inch. I commented about it when the guy was doing it and he said it is fine. And another older lady walked by (she look like a customer) and said yes it is fine. Assuming they do this all day, so I just shut up :( Right after that there is another family and the dad requested to have 5 inches chopped off. God. There I panicked. I have a feeling we'd be OK but I don't like being worried about this the whole time. Next year I'd insist on cutting 2 inches....

@Adira: I am hoping too because we already half- decorated it hahaha. It would suck if we have to take everything down and get another one....

It was a bit concerning because this is the 2nd year I ever get a real tree. The first year we got it live from a farm, and the tree DID drinks like crazy the first 2 weeks. This year we got it precut, and it wasn't like last year. Learning from trial and error while keeping my fingers crossed!

@irene: I mean, maybe your tree stand holds a ton more water than mine, so maybe it's fine. The fact that it's drinking is a good sign though. :)

@Adira: Yes we got the tree but it hasn't been drinking like crazy. I mean the water level went down but I haven't watered it yet since Saturday 11am when we put it in water (It is 9am Monday). But then again I overfilled the water level in our super tree stand.... I am hoping it is gonna be OK....

@irene: Did you end up getting your tree? I think as long as you cut off about an inch from the base before you put it in your stand and keep it watered, you'll be fine.

We got a pre-cut tree on Saturday. Chopped off an inch from the bottom and have been watering it like crazy. It drinks a LOT in the first couple days!

@yin: I see - Ahh. I really hope we'll be OK because now DH actually twisted his wrist (yes, by just only rotating the tree's position in the tree stand) so I don't think we can cut anything ourselves. He said if the tree doesn't drink then we'll dispose it and buy another one next weekend, but I hate the thought that we killed a perfectly good tree :( Please wish me luck! And I hope the water level drops tremendously tomorrow morning.....

Another thing about home depot - Aren't you guys worried about it as none of the trees are "watered" at the lot? We went by whole foods today and each tree is in its individual stand with water. But I guess I do see that no one will be there to cut the base for you.

@irene: We buy the cheapest tree available and search for the shortest one (6 ft or shorter). We've bought nicer ones in the past, and honestly the cheap ones are better overall. It may not be as lush, but you can't tell once you put up the decorations.

Wait a few days to see if the tree drinks the water. I usually don't notice a difference until morning time. I have better luck at home improvement stores with getting a clean, even cut. Even so, we occasionally have to cut it at home to make sure it fits nicely on our stand. While it's a pain, it can be done with a saw.

@WinterBee: I am so jealous! You live on a farm or something?!

We got our tree this morning. However the home depot guy cut only maybe barely 1 inch (actually less, more like 3/4 inch) of the base out, so I've been having panic attacks the tree isn't sucking in water. In fact the whole day the water level appears to be around the same level, and I thought they were supposed to suck in way more water the first few days. I was in deep regret when another family requested the guy to cut a whole chunk of 5 inches off. Why didn't they do that to everyone?!

When I expressed my fear to DH (without telling him that the guy only cut 3/4 inch off the base as he went to pay when that was happening), he said oh maybe I killed the tree by "slamming" it hard on the ground 10 times outside of the house when he tried to get all the loose leaves off before bringing into the house. Ah great. We even got back to Home Depot to ask them about our situation and all they said was you'll be fine unless if you are really concerned you can buy this product for xyz dollars. Sigh. Please tell me we will be OK....

@irene: We get our tree off of our property. It's lots of fun walking around and picking out our favourite one.
We usually get it later, but this year I'm hoping we'll have it set up the weekend of December 10th.
This was our tree last year.

We have been getting our Christmas tree at Lowe's for the past several years. It's affordable (about $25) and lasts through the end of December. Last year we bought our tree after Thanksgiving, and it was one of our best ones yet. Needles stayed in place and looked great until the end of the year.

We are going this weekend!

A few years back we started a tradition of going to a Christmas tree farm and cutting down our own. It makes for a fun day (albeit cold usually) and I do think they last longer since its fresh cut.

I like the balsam or Fraser fir. Be sure to give a ton of water in the first week or so, they drink a lot in the beginning then slow down.
