Several friends told us they did this and it worked out well- DS is 2.5 and LO #2 is due next week, and we have a glider bike that we plan to give him as a present from the new baby. Plus he is REALLY into birthday parties (and cake and ice cream) so we told him there could be a party with cake and ice cream.

Yes, but I didn't say it was from #2! My parents actually gave him a fire house for Christmas that they saved to set up until DD arrived (when he stayed with them, he was SO excited to play with it). I had a few new Melissa and Doug puzzles and coloring books + snacks in a little back pack for him when he had to wait at the hospital.

My BFF just had baby #2 and did this! Gave #1 a present "from the baby!" I think it helped - they didn't have any problems with DD#1 feeling left out. She is 2.5.

Yup, I packed it in my hospital bag. DD was old enough to understand and she still remembers that baby sis gave her a present.

I don't think we'll do this. We would if E was older but I don't think he'd really understand.

Yeah...I had a stuffed bear I had saved for ds for when s came. Of course he got it anyways when we lost her. He'll get something when this baby comes too.

Yes. They both got Waldorf dolls (similar, but not identical). Lorelei's was smaller. We didn't really have Lorelei give the doll to Ellie (Ellie was 5, I think we might have said it was "from baby" if she had been a little younger), but we did say it was a big sister gift, and then she brought Lorelei's to the hospital for her. It seemed to go over well, though it certainly didn't seem necessary.

When DS was born DD wasn't even 2 yet. So we didn't do anything like that. This time around, she is going to be closer to 4, so we might do something like that. I do try to make sure she is actively involved with picking stuff for the new baby, like we will go and have her pick out an outfit or something. I also plan on doing a special big brother/big sister outing before the baby is born, but it won't occur at the hospital.

You know, like, a gift to help introduce the new baby to the older child? Did you do that?

I have a few things wrapped up (gifts I've saved for a rainy day, things for Christmas, etc.) and I'm wondering how and when of even if I should give DD a "gift from the new baby."

Any experiences you want to share?
