I have a kitchen aid stand mixer that is great, although it's in the pantry so I don't use it as much. I think I'd use it a lot more if I had room for it to stay on the counter.
I have a cuisinart hand mixer that I love and use frequently because its much easier to bring out.

I have a KA stand mixer, I haven't used it in forever. I find a food processor to be more useful for the type of cooking/baking that I do.

i love my Kitchenaid stand mixer. I do bake a lot (at least 1x/week), but since getting it I have found lots of other things to use it for, like mashed potatoes and shredding chicken (so simple!)
I will say that I have multiple bowls and paddles for it- if I didn't, it would be a lot more trouble than it's worth to have to wash out the bowl midway through a recipe.

I have both a Kitchen Aid stand mixer, and a Kitchen Aid hand mixer! I love them both, and I would recommend both of them very much!

@blackbird: I have an immersion blender too, I was afraid to get it out and have it break! I'll remember that about the food processor if I get the itch to bake again this week.

@MapleMoose: I was able to finish mixing things by hand, thank goodness! The batter was from a box, so not terribly difficult, but the icing was from scratch and required a bit more muscle. My arm is sore this morning!

You could use a food processor, too! I use that for small batches of things like banana bread

I have a KA stand mixer with the lift up bowl and I love it. I am a big baker and it mixes things perfectly. I've also got a lot of attachements, surprisingly one of my favs is the meat grinder/sausage stuffer.

I primarily use my Kitchen Aid stand mixer, but I also have a Black & Decker hand mixer that I used before I got the Kitchen Aid. Had it for several years and it seems to work fine. I don't remember exactly how much I paid but it was probably in the range of $15-$20.

P.S. That is so annoying when you're in the middle of cooking/baking and things break... or you don't have the ingredients you thought you had. Were you able to make the cake and frosting anyways?

@PurplePeony: I loved my hand mixer, especially for things like mashed potatoes! It wasn't as powerful so things didn't fly everywhere. Thanks for your experience!

I have a KA Artisan stand mixer and a Cuisinart 5-speed hand mixer. If I were to be choosing new ones, I'd go for the next level up KA, with the lift-bowl rather than the tilt-head. If you ever knead bread dough in your mixer, I'd say this is really important. The dough causes the pin that holds the tilt-head in position to loosen and it's really annoying. For basic batters, cookie dough, mashed potatoes, etc, the Artisan is fine.

I also like having a hand mixer for times when I need to be mixing multiple things or when I don't feel like using the big mixer. My only beef with the Cuisinart I have is that even the lowest speed is pretty high, so I need to be really careful to use a deep bowl with it or things go flying across the kitchen. On the flip side, it's got plenty of power and definitely gets the job done.

Tonight, I decided to bake a cake for my last day of work before maternity leave. I have two mixers, a cheap Proctor Silex that I usually use for regular food and a Sunbeam stand mixer that I use for baking. While mixing the batter, my Proctor silex started to smell like the motor was burning. Not a huge deal because it was like $15 and I have another. So I made the frosting with my baking mixer and halfway through it breaks! Ugh. Both mixers are about six years old (I got them for Christmas together).

Tell me about your mixer. I've always wanted a KitchenAid but I don't bake all that often. With Thanksgiving coming up and a baby that I'd like to make food for, I need a new mixer!
