As DS gets older we tend to buy one "big" gift and a few smaller ones. We don't have a set amount, but we definitely don't go crazy either. I also like the idea of "want, need, wear, read" which is what we did for his birthday last year.

@Cole: I like the idea about looking thru a catalog - he loves money and adding (math) so I think he would get a huge kick out of "spending the money"!

My mom eventually asked us if we would prefer she buy gifts that same way as always (a bunch of stuff, mostly cheap) or buy one or two nicer things. My brother especially latched onto the idea of one or two bigger things quickly, he much prefers getting one thing he really wants.

What if you make a game of pretending you have $200 how would you spend it while looking through a toy catalog or website so he can see the prices? If that game goes well you could spring board into a birthday conversation and if not you can just handle it as you see fit this year.

I love talking my nanny kids shopping for birthday gifts for their siblings! We usually stick to a pretty low budget but they typically find something I would never ever buy but turns out to be much loved by their sibling.

Well I don't have kids but generally when I'm buying gifts I prefer to buy one nicer gift then a bunch of cheaper or smaller things. I always look at it as an opportunity for the gift recipient to have something nicer than they would normally have or afford. For adults I like to get luxury items they wouldn't normally get for themselves.

Growing up and to this day my parents also get me and my brother, (and my husband), one bigger, nicer item as opposed to a bunch of little things that we could just buy for ourselves. DH and I are the same way with gift giving to each other. DH's family on the other hand is the opposite and will get a ton of little, cheaper things. I don't really understand those sort of gifts but to each their own.

Do you have a set amount of $$ you are willing to spend or a set number of gifts?

DS's bday is coming up and he asked me for "lots of gifts" haha
He will be 6 so of course he wants lots. But I am tired of buying cheap crap so it looks like he has more. Not sure if he will understand if I tell him that he can have a few nice gifts or a bunch of cheap ones. what will you do?

Also he suggested that his little sister should buy him something - her options were
1) a jet
2) an even bigger jet.

ha!

Will your sibling buy a gift for their brother/sister?
