My son is 2.5 and can do most of those things you mentioned by himself. I just don't always let him!

Everyone is different, but after my c section (my second) it was around 4-5 weeks before I could really lift him up and carry him no problem. I probably could have done it before but I would have been forcing myself and was worried I'd hurt myself.

@charlotte: Oh I see.... in that case LO does climb in and out of the tub with my help for quite some time now... at least a few months (he's now 3 years 2 months). Actually he likes to climb out of the tub when I am not looking - eg. when I go out to get towels and stuff! It freaks me out and I told him not to because what if he slips and falls on his face and breaks his teeth?! We do have a shallow tub at his bathroom though so that's a big factor too. And he does climb onto his chair...etc.

Does your LO do a lot of physical things at the park? Maybe going to the park or indoor playground encourages him to climb more and be more physical..? It depends on the personality too! Good luck!

My daughter is about 35m and she's been able to climb in and out of the tub for a while. It's really more about how long her legs are.
In terms of in and out of cars she can climb into her seat by herself but does need a boost into the car because ours is so high off the ground.
She's been out of a high chair / booster for we'll over a year so she climbs in and off dining chair / benches by herself.

@charlotte: I definitely think it's a personality thing too. My DS is easy going as well, and isn't really all about doing things himself. I push him when necessary, but I'm definitely not ready for him to be climbing/falling everywhere, especially when I'm pregnant. lol

@irene: oh sorry, I wasn't clear! I definitely don't want him bathing alone anytime soon, was just curious about climbing in and out!

@lamariniere: @ValentineMommy: that's how I feel too! My friend told me her 2.5 year old uses his potty as a step stool into bath and I was confused and thinking it would def be a while before I didn't have to lift my guy!

In some ways these answers are making me rethink how long I will have my mom stay to help after my next c-section!! And I am always on the lookout for him falling back behind on the motor skills so it makes me happy that he is likely on schedule for many of these things. Everyone tells me my LO2 will be the daredevil and to enjoy this easy guy who will let me place / take him anywhere and doesn't want to climb the crib!

At 20ish months, LO started wanted to climb out of the bathtub. I'd just wipe the edge and be there to guide/spot, but he'd do the bulk of hopping out. I'm afraid he'd slip too, so I guide/spot, so I could grab him if he started to slip, but I'm not even pregnant and heaving him out of the tub is hard these days! He's almost 32lbs! He tells me he's all done and then I tell him I'm helping him get out and he gets out!

The car seat, he is physically capable of climbing in and sitting properly but he's not mentally capable lol. There are too many exciting things to touch between the door of the car and his seat, he wants to play with the coat hanger thing, the lights, the seat belts, etc.

He has a high chair and a kids' table and chair. We put him in his high chair but he can pull himself into the kid-sized chair easily. He eats there a lot!

My almost 2 year old still needs some help, and i'm about 34 weeks pregnant. She can climb into her booster on her own, but I don't trust her to climb in and out of the bath without falling in. Plus, she's going through a bath refusal stage and would be more than happy to stay outside the tub, yet plan IN it (and probably fall in or tilt in and get stuck), so it's best if i put her in.

I usually sit on the closed toilet (RIGHT next to the bath) and lift her in. When I have to get her out, i sit on the floor next to the tub and pull her out. Dry her off on the floor, then walk her to her bedroom next door for a diaper.

She can't climb into her car seat because we have Foonfs and they sit awfully high off the seat. So i squat down, pick her up, and set her in the seat. She can buckle her chest strap in, but then i do the crotch strap and tighten her in.

Squat with your legs!

I'm with @lamariniere on the bath one....I'd be afraid of him slipping and smacking his face or something (which I did as a child).

My DS is 31 pounds at 25 months old (and 37" tall). He doesn't climb into the car/carseat himself (nor has he tried), but he can climb out himself. He does do stairs himself. He's also never climbed into his booster seat, but again, we've never let him try. I'm way too afraid of him falling off.

We don't have a car, so I can't answer for that, but my son is 4 and we still pull him in and out of the bath tub. It seems to deep to me to let him try to straddle it to get out. I would be afraid of falls.

Hmm... LO is now 3 years old, I don't remember exactly when, but it seems like it's been a very long time that he just gets in and out of the car seat on his own. Maybe it was between 2-2.5 when he was able to do that? He takes pride in that because he did it himself. Nowadays we just buckle him.. there was one time I actually forgot to buckle him because he was already sitting in his car seat and I was running around grabbing stuff and he told me mommy you didn't buckle me and I had to stop and buckle him haha.

Taking a bath though, I imagine it would take a while longer. The thing is if you would trust that he'd do a good job, or what's he even doing in the bathroom!

Lots of good answers, thanks! He just turned two a couple weeks ago so it sounds like he is within the range of normal but could start working on them. I think he could totally do the stairs alone, up and down. It's not really a strength issue, more of a confidence issue. Bath is what made me pose the question because it just hurts from my triceps to my core! But I can also see wanting to unteach how to get in and out. Mobility really is a blessing and a curse. I am going to try to challenge him a bit more and see what happens. Thanks again.

Also pregnant, with a large 2.5 year old (38 lbs). He's capable of climbing in the car by himself (usually with a hand to hold on to), but I don't usually go that route because then he starts fooling around and takes forever to turn himself around in the seat. So I find it easier to just lift him in myself. He's been climbing in and out of the bath and into his booster seat at the table for a while. Your son might surprise you if you ask him to try. You could also get a stepstool for the car to help him. That's my plan for after my c-section when I absolutely can't lift him.

My daughter is 2 yrs 8 months and does all of these things herself (except the car seat because we live in a city and don't drive often....though I suspect she could if need be). The only one of those things that is recent is getting in and out of the bath. The others she's done for awhile now. Probably in part because she's had to (I have a second daughter 22 months younger).

As long as you're there to help spot him, I bet he can safely start learning to do list of these things on his own very soon! Once baby is here you may find yourself wishing you could in-teach him! Dad has gotten waaaaay too brave with the stairs, high doing chairs, and bath recently -she scares me! :)

My daughter is 2 and around 28-30 lbs, so I feel your pain! She can go up the stairs on her own, and down on her belly with supervision or standing up while holding a hand. But she can't really get into her carseat on her own yet. She started trying to climb into her booster seat on her own in the past month or so, and we realized it was safer to let her climb into the chair than the booster, so we took it off and now she can climb into a regular chair on her own without assistance.

Honestly I try to encourage her, but its a trade off between time and effort. If I have the time, I'll let her try the carseat, but sometimes (especially if she is unsure or cautious), it takes longer than I have time for!

Also pregnant here, with a 20 month old. I see emergent skills in my daredevil daughter.

I have to lift my daughter into the car, but I can just put her into the seat of the car and tell her to climb into her seat and she'll at least try most of the time (she loves climbing) although I often have to give her a little boost. It's much easier on me than lifting her all the way into the car seat. I give my daughter my hands when going downstairs and she walks down herself while heavily relying on me, and she will crawl up the stairs with me trailing behind as a spotter. She can climb into some adult sized chairs on her own (makes me nervous!) but isn't capable of getting into her booster seat on her own.

Good question! My LO is 2y3mo and climbs into his car seat on his own sometimes, and can get up the stairs themselves. We don't let him try to do the bath (it's a give an inch he'll take a mile situation there!) He can climb up slides by himself, though I stay behind him. He climbed into his high chair tonight. So maybe I can back off of him a little bit?

My LO is 2 and pretty big...about 33 lb. I'm pregnant and it is becoming harder and harder to lift him in and out of bath and my SUV. when could your LO get in and out on their own? What about in and out of booster seat for eating and doing the stairs alone? I'm not sure if some of the help I give him is not really age appropriate anymore. He was a bit delayed in gross motor skills but doing well now. He is still pretty cautious and methodical about things.
Any thoughts?
Thanks !
