Thanks! I think maybe I am being a bit cautious, especially because LO has always done really well handling his food. I'm gonna try some new things and see how it goes.

Even when LO only had a few teeth she used her gums to gum up hard foods. But I was also very confident tin her chewing abilities despite lack of teeth.

LO is 14 months and still only has 4 teeth. I'm amazed at some of the food she can manage. For the most part I cook everything to the point we would eat it now - not steamed to mush and she does fine. But now she'll eat crusty bread, raw carrots and celery and green beans just fine as long as I make the pieces small.

@Dagny: I figured if I could squish it between my fingers, he could squish it in his gums--that was my litmus test! :)

@HILSY85 - thank you, that's helpful! LO has only four teeth right now, but sometimes I wonder if I go overboard softening food. It's so hard to find the sweet spot!

LO is 18 months and still only has 4 teeth on top and 3 on the bottom, so he is still chewing with his gums. So I just make sure that whatever I give him is soft enough that he can squish it betwee his gums. As he has gotten older he has also gotten better at chewing, so now he can eat things like chicken sausage, apple slices, crackers, etc.

For example, a couple times a week I make a big 'veggie scramble' for breakfast. It's basically just sautéed veggies. Normally, I would sauté them only, but in order for LO (12 mo) to eat it, I have to steam then sauté (or some combination of this). How long until your LO could eat foods that aren't softened as much? Does this depend on how many teeth they have? Do you just gradually decrease how soft the food is over time or just start giving LO the 'harder' food?
