DD's nap time is 9-10:30am, and the classes and playgroups in our area seem to start at 10 or 11am. We don't have problems making 11am, so we signed up for the library Baby Time then, but we only go to casual play groups that start at 10am so we can get there late.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one! We actually do get out plenty- we did a mommy and baby class really early on and we still see some of them on a weekly basis. I guess we will just have to wait for music class. I'm just tired of singing the same songs to her! :)

LO has always been pretty flexible about her nap schedule, so we've always done morning activities. It's only now at 6 months that it seems to be affecting her night sleep to not adhere to a schedule, so it might come to an end.

I started classes with my older around 18 months and it was perfect b/c he was down to one nap a day by then. It was a little rough at first b/c he had just dropped his first nap so I had some trouble keeping him awake on our way home sometimes. Had to find ways to keep him up for 15 minutes until he got used to it. With my second I'm sure he would have been fine skipping his morning nap before he turned 12 months b/c there were days he would just nap for 30-45 mins or not nap at all. Now he's a great napper at 22 months and could do without one if it was up to him. :P

This is the one benefit of having an early riser who takes a short morning nap.

We just try and be flexible. Sometimes we miss going because of naps. We've been doing morning activities since 6 months.

@illumina: I think you make a good point about the groups being mostly for the parents. I desperately wanted to meet other new moms, which is largely why I wanted to do the story times, classes, etc. (I was also in a new area, so I had no local friends at all.) In the end, though, I can attest that you meet plenty of other parents (and you can actually determine whether your kids like each other too!) if you just do the older toddler activities. It made for a rather lonely year or so, but I guess I can take comfort in the fact that my son was always well rested. I got a lot of reading done that year, too. :)

Also, it's just my experience, but I have met more friends doing the stuff I genuinely enjoy doing with my LO, such as walking in the park and swimming at the pool, than I have in group activities. I guess that makes sense. Because of where we met, we already knew we had something in common other than being parents of small children.

@honeybear: I completely agree about the baby activities. We have baby yoga, massage, music classes, swimming available and I just don't see the point in it when, at 4.5 mths, she gets just as much interest and stimulation when I go food shopping! I just do 2 mum & baby groups per week, which is definitely more for me than her!

We have two morning activities. One, I was completely naive in signing up for (it is an 11:15am class) and we have missed half of them so far. Luckily, it is only a 6 week series and wasn't too expensive. Since B is a crap napper we've been able to make it the other times.

Our other morning class is at 11:45 and that one hasn't been too much of an issue. We are just a little rushed getting dressed, fed, and out if the house after nap.

I didn't start doing morning activities until LO was about 1.5 years old. I'm an ardent adherent of the "let sleeping babies lie!" school of thought, however! ;)

I lamented not getting out nearly as much as I wanted to for that year and half, but in retrospect, I think older children get way more out of the classes and story times. I like the idea of baby activities, but now that I've seen them in practice and have some toddler classes to compare them to, I'm not really sure that the baby classes are developmentally appropriate. (Not that they're bad, just that the babies in them generally look like they could care less. That's not true of the classes for 2-3yos I've seen.)

When she started one nap. Now I can guarantee she will nap anywhere between 11:30 and 1. We just try to stick a snack or lunch in her before we leave somewhere because she is probably going to fall asleep on the drive home...

Not until he went to one nap around 11 months. It was so frustrating that everything was at 10 or 10:30 and he took his first nap 9ish-10:15ish so by the time he was up and nursed, we couldn't get anywhere. I feel your pain!

From the time LO was 2 months up until recently, she hasn't woken up in the morning until around 9 or so. So we could do morning activities easily, but not afternoons.
In the last two weeks, she has started waking up at 7:30, which means her first nap is right at 9. So we're kind of out of the morning activity routine.

Honestly I didn't regularly start morning activities until LO was about 13 months...we could do the short morning activities like library story times. Shortly after that we could do the longer morning activities like play gyms and children's museum classes

We started going when he was down to one nap around 14 months. Before that his morning nap was from 830-10 or 1030. We had the issue of him falling asleep in the car for awhile but I learned tricks to keep him awake :)

We have the same issues. Everything here starts at 11am and S needs to go down for her lunchtime nap around 12pm--so we only go for a short time and then head home before we have a meltdown! The last two days we haven't made it back until 12.30pm--today because I also had to pop to a shop to get milk! Yesterday she wasn't too bad and dealt with waiting another 30-45mins for her nap, but today...ugh, the crying!

It's so frustrating because most of my friends' babies are fine with not napping for like 3-4hrs at a time even at 4-5months :(

We're experiencing the same issue. We signed up for a baby and me aquafit class, but it just doesn't work for us because of nap schedules. There are a bunch of other activities that we.re missing out on because they're sometime between 9 and 10. If only they were in the afternoon!

Urgh. It's annoying isn't it?! I just work around them. Usually only going to one nap disruptive thing a week. But I guess it teaches them to be versatile?

My community has some great programs like story time and music classes, totally FREE, but they are all in the morning around 10:30-11:30. C usually wakes up around 8 and goes down for a nap around 10, give or take a half hour, so we can never do them. Her morning nap is really the only one I can count on so I prioritize it, afternoon is a little more flexible.

So we don't get to do any of the fun classes. When did you start going to morning activities and how did they work out with nap times?

Looking on the positive side it's pretty easy to make lunch plans with her current schedule.
