My just under 2 year old loves to get a tissue, do barely a blow, and throw it in the trash. I'm not sure it fully works, but she is sort of there. I imagine it would be awhile before she really gets it all out.

@lamariniere: Haha, my son too. It's like he doesn't get the concept that only one nostril will blow out so you have to plug the other side.

My DD turns 4 this month and I saw her blow her nose herself for the first time today. She was at dance class and asked me for help before and after class. But during class she ran out, got a tissue, blew her nose, and tossed the tissue out. So she can do it.

@Chuckles: my 2 year old is getting really good at it. My nearly 4 year old was able to do it from about 2.5 on onwards. But we encourage them to be independent at these things from very early on.

My DS was maybe 4.5? At 6, he still doesn't do it right. My DD could do it correctly before 2.

DS is 4.5 and just learned how to physically blow his nose. I definitely still have to hold the tissue, otherwise he'd have snot smeared all over his face. Also, he acts like I'm literally torturing him when I do make him blow

Could do it independently? Around 2.5ish. But at 4 he still often just wipes on his sleeve. Yuk!

@Bao: That's what I thought, too. It seems like a lot to ask, but maybe all the other kids in his class can? I don't know.

@Bao: Thanks! Maybe another time that his teachers just don't have great judgment :bummed: I told them that I'm totally on board with them having him wipe his nose if it's just a little runny, but I'm concerned that he won't be able to blow his nose well enough and he'll end up with an ear infection or cough. It's not like his nose is crazy stuffy, like a sinus infection, just enough that he needs a little help with it.

ETA: part of why I'm asking and annoyed at the teachers is because they told me today that he had a complete meltdown because they were pushing him to do it himself.

Like the whole thing - get a tissue, hold it themselves, blow until their nose is clear, and wipe. My LO is 3.5 and his teachers at school have been wanting him to blow his nose completely independently. He's good at wiping when it's just a little runny and will blow when I hold the tissue, but he doesn't do it on his own yet when his nose is stuffier. When could your LO blow their own nose totally on their own when it was stuffy?
