she can kinda do it with coaching and tries on her own, but barely readable at 4. i'd assume she could do it by the end of this year, so before 5.

4.

Writing is extremely developmental! I have worked with 5-6 year olds who cannot write their names, so I never worry about it.

C can write the first two letters of her name but is nowhere close to spelling the whole thing. Poor thing has 9 letters and it isn't phonetically easy, lol.

I'm a primary literacy coach and writing their name is a skill we like to have our Kindergartners come in with, so I'm not too worried. Even then, probably only 50% of our Ks can write their name when they enter in September.

3.5. One was almost illegible and the other was pretty neat. Now at a couple months shy of 4, they can both write their names pretty legibly, but I credit their 3-year old preschool because I definitely didn't work with them on it.

My LO is 3.5 and has zero interest in writing, even though he loves talking about letters and letter sounds. His name is 7 letters. He knows that it starts with an S, and he knows a couple of other letters in his name, but he doesn't know how to spell it.

4, completely legible, first and last name, 15 letters. It's only because I taught K and I saw so many kids who couldn't write, or even recognize their name or letters in their name. I'm lucky though that he has the pencil grip down and was motivated to learn.

@lawbee11: she has been spelling her name for ages- I don't even know how long. And she actually knows all her letters and sounds they make, like if I ask what a word starts with and emphasize the first letter, she gets it right about 75% of the time. But she doesn't write them.

Hmm...I think a little before she turned 3? But, my older LOs name is only 4 letters long, and she was writing in all caps. She learned her capital letters pretty early and still struggles with lowercase at 3.5. I have done 0 teaching or coaching of lowercase levels. I think they've just started introducing them in pre-k.

She currently writes her name with all caps 75% of the time. If I verbally ask her to, she will attempt a capital M and then lowercase for the rest. Her caps are great...lowercase, not so great--they are frequently inverted or half confused with other letters, etc.

At her school, the kids have to sign in every morning and recently, the teacher added attempting their last names. Our last name is longer, so right now LO just does a few letters of her last name.

M is not close. She can make an O and that's about it. She's definitely been improving with tracing letters but I think we're a ways off from being able to write her whole name. Her teacher has a poster up with all the kids who can spell their name and all the kids who can write their name. M is one of the youngest in her class and even still there are only 4-5 kids (out of 24) in the column who can write their name.

Ok this is all going along with what I thought was normal. She can occasionally make the letters with serious coaching, but very rarely does it alone and I doubt anyone could read it besides me. Her teacher mentioned that some of the older kids in the class had been for a while, as part of a brief discussion about kindergarten readiness. I started wondering if I should be letting her practice more or what but sounds normal.

A little after age 4. At 4.5 it's even more legible now, although it's still often a mix of upper and lower case letters. LO's name is 7 letters long; she would often do just the first 3 before she turned 4.

around 3.5/4 with serious coaching. At 4.5 she can make all the letters independently, but still isn't always great about writing them in a line. If I posted a picture of it today, it's questionable whether or not you (not knowing her name) would clearly know what her name is....kind of depends on how interested she was in writing it at the moment. :)
