The first 2 weeks were awful, like @kml636: and then I went to the lactation consultant. It improved a little. then one side got worse.
It was still not great till 9 weeks/2 months ish.

Now I love BFing--though I still get sore during his growth spurts (every time!)

We're at 7 months now.

Despite them saying it shouldn't hurt, it was "toe curling pain" for the first two weeks when she would latch. Then all of a sudden it got better, maybe because she learned to latch better? Hope it gets easier for you!

Around 3 weeks for me, but I think I lucked out with a LO that's a natural. I had the toe curling pain for the first 2 weeks and it was awful!

@78h2o: keep your spirits up! it got better when we were around 6 weeks too and I had toe-curling pain for a while at the beginning. it started to get more enjoyable around 12 weeks when she became a more efficient nurser too.

LO is now 13 months old and we successfully nursed and pumped until just recently day-weaning. You can do it too!

Okay, this is encouraging. Maybe things will improve when I get to 6 or 8 weeks!

All you mamas rock for sticking with it!

Breastfeeding is still painful for me at almost 12 weeks. However it is because of a lip tie that we are getting fixed soon. Hopefully I can ditch the pump after we get his lip tie repaired.

I got past the cracked nipple stage at around 3-4 weeks and then had a lip tie cut at eight weeks which along with a growth spurt seems to have finally got us to pain free nursing.

Just hang in there Mama, it will keep getting better and you're doing an awesome job!

I don't feel like breastfeeding really felt natural/pain-free until I was at least 6 weeks pp. It took a while to get in a groove, but once we were there, breastfeeding was a piece of cake.

@78h2o: First of all, congrats!!!! i missed the news that your LO had arrived! My LO and i have had issues from the start and i would have to say it started getting more tolerable around 6 weeks. I say tolerable bc it's still not comfortable but it is relatively pain free.

I either have super tough nipples, or I've been lucky.
Didn't have sore/cracked/blistered nipples with either of my kids.

I know bf'ing isn't *supposed* to hurt, but for me it's been pretty painful so far. At the hopsital, the lac consultation said that my nipples were blistered because my LO had a super strong suck... my nipples scabbed, etc. then bf'ing was less painful. Then Julia started screwing up the latch midway through a session, doing a painful lip-smacking type thing, and biting. I try to keep taking her off and re-latching her, smooshing her into my boob (so she can't pull back or lip smack so easily, but she still bites and does other painful things. I go to a bf'ing support group with lac consultants 1-2x/wk and they try to help, but it still hurts... not the toe-curling pain that it was in the beginning, but not comfortable either.

So... just curious, when did bf'ing stop being painful for you?

ETA: My LO is 4 weeks.
