C likes eating books and slamming covers shut mostly. He's almost 9 months. He does pay attention to his bedtime book, and he's starting to get really into any "touch and feel" book with textures he can pat.

@Mrs. Twine: That also reminds me of LO's Sassy Look Book (photo book) . . . It has pictures of LO; DH, LO, and me together; me and LO; and all of the grandparents. She doesn't look at it as much as she used to, but she will still flip through it and identify the people in it!

@MsLipGloss: That looks so cute!
@Mrs. Twine: She has two bath books, and all she grabs it and eats it. A picture book is a great idea. Thanks!

I would say in the last week or so C has started purposely choosing books and looking through them. She was 11 months yesterday. She's still not super engaged when I read to her, although she is starting to point at different things in the book and sit quietly with me for a few pages. We've made it successfully through a whole book a few times even! When she's insistent on getting down when we're reading, I let her go crawl around and play and just keep reading. I figure it's better than nothing! I make sure to keep lots of board books in her toy box and they're always the first things she pulls out to sort through and look at, so I think there's hope she'll love reading as much as her mama!

@MsLipGloss: Lorelei LOVES that, even still! We also have "Carry Me" which is sort of similar. And "Hands Can." We just found one called, "Happy Bird Day," by the author of, "Stranger in the Woods," that is a board book with photographs. We put up a bird feeder this fall, and she had fun seeing many of the birds we see visit our feeder in the photographs. I think that books with photographs really appeal to babies.

Also, have you considered making a book for her with pictures you have taken? Lorelei has really liked hers! We just used small picture albums and glued photographs on to sheets of paper with text on them. We would write about things like, "Lorelei's Day," or silly things about the dogs... or if you want to get really fancy you could get something printed by Pinhole Press or somewhere like that. Ellie has a few "books" like that about her, and she still likes to read them (to herself now) at age 6.

Ellie was interested in books from about 6 months on. Wonderful attention span, loved reading... it was fabulous.

Lorelei didn't start liking or requesting them until around 18 months. In the last few weeks she has really taken off.

My advice is use the library lots to see what might appeal to her. Don't write off cloth books or bath books or anything-- it doesn't have to be fancy to start pre-literacy skills. Try reading to her at other times. Meals? In the car if there is another driver? After breakfast? For the longest time Lorelei really only liked books with photographs. We figured that out from lots and lots of library trips. She also didn't mind lift the flap books or books with textured pages. Poetry can be great for small kids-- it condenses some really lovely things about language into a small package. Just keep on keeping on.

@Smurfette: maybe try checking out some different ones from the library? These are a few of his favorites! My LO definitely likes "reading" on his own more than us reading to him. He will only tolerate that for a few minutes on a lap. I'm often reading while laying on the floor as he runs around me ha!!

ETA- we also have books at his level in every room he goes in, so he can always grab one.

@Smurfette: Let me know how it goes!! I should say that most of the time Xander just tries to turn the pages on me and probably isn't actually interested in the story. And he also tries to eat books - that's mainly what he does. But I think having the Barn Book and the Forest book out with his toys has helped him be interested because he can just play with them whenever he pleases.

Haha well at 6 months she loves to eat them! I do actually think she likes the pictures, especially very bold prints, because she gets all excited when I turn the page and puts her hands all over the pictures. It's cute <3

@Adira: In my cart!
@scg00387: We have one. The Karen Katz, Where is my belly button. She likes it for 10 secs and then moves on.

I swear my kid isn't into anything unless she can put it in her mouth.

I would say by 12-14 months for LO. We added reading to our bedtime routine when we sleep trained at 6 months old, so he's always had exposure to them. He gets it more and more as he gets older.

Have you tried flap books? Other books with actions??
LO had always loved books but is particularly interested in these, and books with 3d elements or"real photos" of babies and/or animals. Does she have board books down at her accessible level?

The book Open the Barn Door (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0679809015/) TOTALLY got Xander interested in books. He LOVES listening to Hubs or I make the animal noises and be able to open the flaps himself to reveal the animal. Do you have anything like this book? I think this and Peek-a-Boo Forest (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043D28B4/) are the reason he's not interested in books. The Barn Door book, he'll make us read multiple times in a row. I can tell he's interested because he'll crawl over to it and pick it up and then look at me expectantly. Then I'll put him in my lap and read it and he'll flip open the flaps as we go. Then when we get to the end, he just looks at me until I start reading again.

But other times, he'll pick up a book and I'll take it to start reading it to him, and he just crawls away, so I know he's not really interested. And often when I'm reading something, he just likes flipping the pages and will open and close the book over and over again and I'm not really sure he's interested. But he definitely enjoys turning the pages (I'll get it started for him by separating the next page from the rest and then he'll grab it and turn it himself).

Xander is 10 months and probably started showing an interest (especially in the Barn Door book) around 9 months.

My LO has been interested in them because she is obsessed with turning the pages and opening the flaps (not so much the stories!). She used to sit for a few stories (probably around 10-12 months), and then she wouldn't (probably around 13-14 months--she just wanted me to turn the pages), and now she will bring hubs/myself the book(s) she wants us to read to her (she is 16 months). She also loves to sit close to her books and try to open them/flip through the pages all by herself.

Yeah, up until about a month ago (he'll be a year old on Friday), D had far more interest in eating books than in sitting quitely and listening to me read them. Now he'll sit in my lap and let me read for a couple of minutes before he gets restless and starts opening/closing the book, closing it and pushing it away, or flat out trying to launch himself off my lap. But hey - it's progress!

R has no interest in book at all. I read to her every night while she drinks her bottle, but she doesn't pay attention. She stares at the fan, looks around, tries to pull my hair, etc. During the day, she has no interest in them either.
