She started daycare at 12 months and they put her on a one nap schedule. She seemed fine with it so we did it at home too. If she's sick or overtired we might do 2 naps at home but those days are very rare.

That's how the second nap dropping started for us - he would nap in the morning then refuse an afternoon nap. I would drop the morning nap and move the afternoon nap earlier until he gets used to it! It is early, but some babies do drop to one nap before a year!!

I voted 12 months because that's when the days she took one nap outnumbered the days she took two..... but she still has two naps some days at 16 months. You can really tell when E needs a nap so I just go by what she is "telling me" every day and take each day as it comes.

Just realised this thread had come back! Thanks for the extra input  Just to update in case anyone in the same position finds this, I followed the advice on this thread and tried out one nap for a week. It all seemed to be going well at first but then he started getting more and more tired each day, and waking up for the day at 4.30 am because he was so overtired! The total nap time was very similar, but I guess he just couldn't handle the longer awake times. We went back to 2 naps, limited the am one to 30 mins and pushed them both back by half an hour - and he is back to normal. He is still fighting them sometimes but it seems worth persevering for now.

I voted 12 months, but it was really more like 11 months when he started the transition on his own. He started completely refusing to take his afternoon nap, so I gradually made his morning nap later and later. Now he's almost 16 months and has been on 1 nap for awhile. He usually sleeps 12-2 or 12-230. Occasionally he will take an epic 3 hour nap.

@illumina: We are not walking yet but he does spend pretty much the whole day on his feet - never seems to affect his sleep however active he is though! I do look forward to being more flexible with activities - a lot of stuff in our area goes on during his am nap. Not sure where I will get a shower in though!

@Bubbles: Haha, I know what you mean about not being able to go back! When she started walking around 12 months, she went through a phase of getting super tired around 930-10 again and I read that is typical and it's best to keep them napping twice a day until they are walking well...but I didn't want to go back to 2, especially as our activities/playdates were all structured around 1 nap, so I didn't and it soon passed :)

Thanks so much for all the responses! @Pumuckl: Testing it out is a good idea - I guess I have this fear that once I start doing it there will be no going back!

@illumina: that's good to know others did it on the early side! It seems like most are quite a bit later but I guess it takes all sorts!

I've just put him down at 1pm (after being awake 7 hours!), and he went straight off to sleep. He was definitely grumpy towards the end but managed to resist falling asleep in the pushchair on our way home. I think I will carry on trying with both naps for another few days before I make the call - I don't want to lose the am one! But it is just so unlike him to battle going to sleep it got me wondering!

We're going through this now at 15 months. If he doesn't sleep good at night (which is rare), he'll still go down for a morning nap, but most days now it's just one nap around noon. Every baby is so different though. DS has a cousin who is still taking two naps at 25 months.

i voted 18+, but i should have voted other. LO's daycare naps in the infant room were horrible, and he only got one nap for a long time when he should have been getting 2 or 3. but at home on the weekends, he didn't drop to 1 nap until 20 months or so. he's on the later side of the spectrum.

She started daycare at 13 mo and they put her down for one nap only. By 14 months, I was also putting her down for one nap only at home. I switched at home because she just didn't seem tired anymore and was getting a good amout of overall sleep.

Exactly 10.5 months! Basically I couldn't get her to take a second nap, or if she did (usually only because she was in the car) it would interfere with bedtime.

It was tough for a week or so to keep her awake, so we went out for a walk around when her 1st nap used to be, served lunch at 11, then it was time for nap at 12.

@Bubbles: He was getting more and more difficult to put down and he stopped taking the afternoon catnaps at daycare. So basically once he was a happy baby with just one nap we pushed back his morning nap to be around noon on the weekends as well. I'd just see how he copes with one nap and then decide if it's the right fit or whether the "battle" is still worth it. It could also happen that alternating between one and two nap days might work. Good luck figuring it out! :goodluck:

I guess I'm missing the option "other" in your poll.
LO dropped to one nap during the week at 9 months because he started daycare then and they only nap once. Sometimes he would get so tired in the afternoon that they'd let him nap in the stroller while the mobile kids played in the yard. On the weekends he would still take two naps right around until he was one. So it was a gradual process for him.

When did your LO drop to one nap, and how did you know they were ready?

DS is usually a great sleeper - he goes down without a fuss for naps and at night, he puts himself to sleep, takes long naps and STTN 10-11 hours. I thought we were miles away from dropping a nap, but now I'm not so sure!

Yesterday he slept 1 hour in the morning as normal, but then he completely refused to take his afternoon nap (usually 2 hours). I tried for 2 hours to help him to sleep! I've never given up on a nap before since he's been in a routine. I chalked it up to a bad day and just put him to bed early, but now he has just done the same thing with his nap this morning. He slept fine overnight so I don't think it's teeth or anything bothering him.

If it's time to drop the nap then I'm sure we can make it work, but I don't want to do it too soon! He's only 10.5 months, but he did drop to 2 naps just shy of 6 months.
