I still need to cut up LO's food now at 12 months. She shoves the whole thing into her mouth also, though within the last couple days, I saw her tear a piece of bread with her fingers. I'm looking forward to when I can just hand her bigger pieces. She only has her 2 bottom teeth right now, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Forever? Like maybe 18 months? He still seriously prefers his food cut up.

It's been gradual for us. Mummums were also an exception for us (mostly bc they were too hard to really shove in her mouth so she had to bite). It's hard to say exactly but I feel like she was definitely not taking bites of things well at 11 months. She is 16mo now and I can hand her a half a grilled cheese sandwich. I think she started taking bites of things maybe shortly after 12 months (this is when she started doing a lot better with food generally). But then our issue was she was like distracted about it so if I handed her a larger piece of food she'd take one bite then throw the rest lol. It has probably only been the last month that I could give her larger things and trust her to hold onto them and take bites.

Also in terms of chewing better/not gagging, that was an issue for us for a looooong time but her getting molars in the last month has been HUGE. Which I guess makes sense. Seriously when she got those first molars it was like she could suddenly eat (almost) like a kid rather than a baby.

Seven months for both my girls. I'm not handing a baby a hamburger or anything like that but she manipulates her own food into suitable bites.

Hm fairly early on. But that doesn't mean that if I give her a big piece of something she doesn't try to shove it in her mouth! lol I think that's more a personality thing tbh. My older one never shoved foods whole but the younger one will. So usually with denser hard to chew foods I will cut up. Softer foods I let go.

LO is 11 months old and is just getting the hang of chewing soft foods (steamed veggies, puffs, eggs, pasta, etc.). However, I still have to cut everything up into little pieces, because no matter what I give her she tries to shove the whole thing in her mouth, which can lead to gagging and choking. The only non-bite size thing she's eaten successfully are mum-mums, and I actually think that's just because they dissolve in her mouth.

When did your LO figure out how to take bites of large things? I'd love to be able to give her things like orange segments, a slice of bread, or a cheese stick!
