We started with the puffs probably around 7/8 or so months. She didn't REALLY start on table foods til about 12 months! But about a month later she has started eating lots of different foods, biting off pieces from a larger piece of food, and rejecting being spoon-fed altogether. All on her own, so I wouldn't worry about it. Never seen a five year old eat purees. ;)

Around 7 or 8 months! We also started with mum mums since they were bigger than puffs. I think we gave her puffs at 9 months so she could practice the pincer.

Around 9 months. She had the pincer grasp down earlier, but for whatever reason wouldn't put it in her mouth. One day it just clicked!

7-8 months. Once he got his grip down, he understood the whole put it in your mouth and eat it. Right now at 13-14 months, he's slowly learning to self feed with a spoon. It equals yogurt everywhere!

Around 8 months he developed his pincer grip and from then on preferred to feed himself. Before that he would hold small crackers, etc and would "eat" them.

@Mrs. Polish: they are rice crackers that easily melt in their mouths like puffs, but the shape and size is perfect to practice grabbing.

@Mrs. Polish: R is the same way. She will sometimes pick up puffs or Cheerios but misses her mouth. I sent some Cheerios to day care today, so she gets more practice, then just on the weekends with us. We have Mum Mums and she wants to be feed....

7-8 months? He wasn't purposely getting food in his mouth though. It seemed like he was just grabbing and of the 5 or so items that he grabbed, maybe one would make it in.

I would try mum mums! My daughter did great with self-feeding when I gave her something large in her hand (like mum mums or large pieces of bread). The puffs might be too small?

Yesterday, I gave him sweet potato fries and apple slices and he was able to grab and put them into his mouth and gnaw on them.

I offer puffs, but lo will only eat them if I put them in his mouth. He does well with all different thicknesses of purees, but won't pick things up off his tray and put them in his mouth. He is 7.5 mo.
