@nugget16 I don't remember exactly since it's been a while, but I think his nap definitely got longer when we pushed it to only one (hit and miss). We would just have the one nap start pretty early for a while. No way he could make it to noon, often it would be like 10:45 or 11 until 1:30 or whatever and then a super early bedtime (6-6:30pm). And even that was rough because he was exhausted but wouldn't go to sleep. He probably needed a 2nd nap until he was quite a bit older, but he refused it so we just went with it. We definitely had a lot of cranky times. But even now (just turned 2), he is very sensitive to being overtired and he just loses it when he is tired. Some kids hold it together a little better, I think.

I've heard that they really need two naps until at least 15 months. For W a few times it seemed like he didn't need both naps but he just needed a bit more time between naps and to start cutting them off - like, I had to start waking him up at 10 and letting him go until 1:30.

For DS1- @15 months
DS2-@13 months

We are finally on a one nap schedule here and my DS2 just turned 14 months. I feel like daycare pushed this schedule earlier than they did for my first son, but I personally like it so much more! He now takes a solid 2.5-3 hour nap. He will fall asleep in the car on the way to the park, etc @9/10, but I quickly wake him.

DS1 had two naps until 16 or 17 months and then it was ages of the morning nap slowly moving later and later and getting longer until it was one nap.

DS2 is 11 months and most days has a morning nap and always has an afternoon nap (he naps when DS1 does). Eventually i think he will just stop taking the am nap. It's short and often in the stroller or carrier because we are out doing things with DS1.

@MrsADS: I know this post is old but I am experiencing the same thing that you posted. How was his overall demeanor when you made him power through to only take one nap? And when you did give him a nap what time did you lay him down and how long did he sleep for on average? Thanks!

Pretty much around 10 months or so - she started waking at about 5, feeding and going back down immediately until 830 or later. She then goes for a nap between 12.30 - 1, and sleeps for 2.5 hours - 3 hours.
@peaches1038: if he is delaying his naps by playing in his crib for quite a while, maybe he isn't ready to be sleeping? all I can suggest is maybe over the holidays try and delay him going for a nap very slowly day by day in 15/30 min increments. pushing the first nap back slowly until it kind of overlaps with what would be the second nap, and hopefully he will not be too overtired and it will become one longer nap. if he can manage that, perhaps he will learn to do longer naps at daycare too.

Wow, I didn't realize we were keeping two naps so late. My daughter is 21 months. Some days one nap is sufficient but other days she's a mess without two naps. I'd love to move to one long nap soon; my previous attempts went poorly.

15 months. Her 2nd nap was getting later and later affecting bed time; I *think* that's why we switched! It sucked a little at the beginning b/c she wakes early and needed to nap by like 11:30 so then evenings were rushed for a while to get her down by 7:30 the latest.

He started transitioning at 14 months and finished around 16 months - he was moved to the toddler room at 15 months, so they started transitioning him to 1 nap about a month before. He still took 2 naps on weekends for a while, to catch up on sleep I think, but he's 16 months now and consistently only takes one 2-2.5 hour nap.

If anyone is more protective about sleep, trust me, it's me! I drive my family (both sides) nuts and I don't care at all. 😆

I want to start by saying that a couple times I thought he was transitioning but it WAS just a phase! So stay consistent with your usual routine and if he is still resisting after a couple of weeks, it might be time. But even then, it's not instant or cold turkey.

For us it started to happen around 15 months but it was a long transition that took 2-3 months of gradually adjusting the nap times. They say when it's time, some days they'll need two, some days just one. And that's the way it was for us. Some days he'd take both no problem. Others he would fight the afternoon nap like crazy. The morning one he always took! So we pushed that nap a later little by little. And we shortened that morning nap little by little. It was solidly 1.5 hours and I took it down to 45 mins (gradually) by gently waking him. This often got us an afternoon nap that was a little later than usual but still doable to keep the same bedtime.
Then we eventually got the morning nap to 11/11:30 and we just had to do a very early bedtime those days. Like 5:30 or even 6! It didn't impact his morning wake up at all! That's how I knew we were doing it right and he needed that extra PM sleep.
It also took him a little while to figure out that the 11/11:30 nap should be longer. So slowly we pushed it later and slowly he started sleeping longer. At first it was 1.5 hours because that's what he was used to. Before long he was going 2.5-3 hours which he still does today at 2y3mo.

It's a long transition, the longest of all nap transitions! It's not as obvious and easy as some of the other transitions. Babysleepsite has a lot on the 2-1 transition.

DS 1 - right around 14 months switched to 1 nap because he started in daycare and they only did one long afternoon nap.

DS2 - He is 14 months now, and is starting to have days were he only has one long nap. if he stays asleep for 1.5-2 hours for his morning nap he won't usually take an afternoon nap at all, i'd like to try to get him to just taking 1 long afternoon nap.

We're fully on 1 nap now at 15 months but he's pretty overtired and could probably still use 2, honestly! He just fights the afternoon one so bad. I think at 12-13 months it was mostly 2 naps, and around 13-14 months it was hit or miss whether he'd take 2. Even now he has days he would definitely take 2 (he is an early riser so he gets tired early!) - but he would take a nap from like 9:30-11 and then want to go back to sleep at like 4pm... which is no good. So we try to keep him up a little later and just have 1.

He started at a home daycare at one and was still on two naps. Our provider would see how the morning was going and if they were out and about or busy she would just push through for no nap in the morning. If he was cranky, she would put him down for a cat nap of about 20 mins and wake him. We did the same at home and within a month or so he was down to one 2-3 hour nap from 12:30 on and has stayed that way since. I have to say I love the one big nap!
