This never worked until DD turned 3ish. Now, she is always willing to try a bite! If she really still doesn't like it, she doesn't have to eat it, but we praise her for at least giving it a shot.

@hilsy85: @2littlepumpkins: @Tanjowen: I just had to update this thread- we have watch the "try new foods" episode of Daniel tiger a few times recently. The other day at lunch C didn't want to try something, so I sang the dog and reminded her how Daniel and his friends tried new foods... And it WORKED! She tried a bite, liked it, and asked for more! I heart Daniel Tiger some days.

Green eggs and ham is a good "try a bite" book! LO loves it so if I start comparing his food to green eggs and quoting the book he sometimes bites!

With my 17mo, the more he thinks I want him to take a bite, the less likely he is to take one! Whereas the other day he tried his first successful new food in months (extra matte cheddar) because he thought he was stealing it off my plate!

Not yet at 27 months. Our best strategy is to not mention trying new foods when served. If she asks I will tell her what it is. No amount of coaxing helps but she is a good eater and will often try something as long as we don't mention it.

At 26 months never.

What does get him eating something is if it a bite off my plate. Even if his plate has the exact same food.

My friend's daughter has always been very obliging when she asked her to "put it[food] in your mouth". Even since like 9-10 no.

I usually ask DD-16 mo "do you want a bite?" and most of the time it's no but every so often, she's interested. I find with younger toddlers you're better off leading by example than trying to convince them to do it. DH generally eats more... toddler friendly? food than me so she'll eat anything he offers her. lol

@hilsy85: @2littlepumpkins: We have not ventured into Daniel Tiger land, but I have heard from several friends it has helped with various behaviors so might be time to start looking it up.

@travellingbee: @Foodnerd81: Ah yes, personality. My kid is suspicious and super independent so food has been an ongoing struggle. I'm really hoping that maybe in a few months he can communicate and understand even more than he does now and that will help.

C is 22 months and it has worked occasionally (but definitely not often) for the last month or two. It's really frustrating when it's something I know she will like.

What works best is if I have something else I know she wants- ok you can have more cheese but I need you to just try one bite of this. When I have something really enticing a it's maybe a fifty percent success rate.

She is a pretty good water in general but can be really stubborn.

I think it's a personality thing honestly. Try a bite has usually worked with LO. Or we can say, have two more bites and then you can have your fruit. He's just a pretty good eater. But I think with some kids, they are just more suspicious of new foods and less likely to try something new.

Maybe around 2 I could sometimes get him to try a bite...mainly thanks to the Daniel Tiger "You gotta try new foods cause they might taste good" song. But I don't push it. He is more likely to eat it if it has been presented many times and he sees us eating it.

My LO is 17 months and we are in a flat out new food refusal. I keep trying, but it's disheartening to see every bit of food get thrown onto the floor.

When did saying, "Try a bite," actually work on your LO? I know there might be a big range of ages with this question, but curious if there is a time you noticed your child would willingly comply.
