Once LO could roll and get to the belly position on his own. But, I still put him down on his back and he'd roll over, himself.

We let him nap that way early on, but I regret it since I had to watch him so closely and he started to not want to nap any other way. I never put him down on his stomach at night until he could roll himself. I remember being so jealous of our parents for being able to put us down on our stomachs since he slept soooo much better that way.

DD woke up on her staunch this morning, at 4 months. She can roll both ways so I'm okay with it. However, I will always lay her down on her back and if she rolls that is her choice. She's usually a side sleeper though, this was the first morning she woke up on her stomach.

I let DD nap on her stomach when she falls asleep during tummy time (8 weeks old). But I am keeping an eye on her.

But even though she seems to prefer her stomach, I will not let her sleep that way at night until she can flip herself into that position.

I let her nap that way super early on since I could keep a close eye on her. She did her first stretch at night on her tummy probably around 3 mo; it was the only way she'd sleep! I let her as soon as she had good head control and could turn her head from side to side.

@sapphire: agreed 110%. I'm a super anxious mom (and doctor fwiw) and wouldn't get an angelcare monitor for those reasons. Once LO could roll herself to her tummy I let her sleep there, but I knew she could roll back on her own - this was around 6 mo. Also I never put her to sleep on her belly even when (especially when! My bed is softer than hers) cosleeping. I let her turn herself.

Not until she rolled herself. Well after a year old I was still putting her down on her back and if she rolled, fine, but I wasn't comfortable puting her down on her tummy.

Five months when she rolled there on her own. It was a pain when she couldn't get from tummy to back b/c she would cry, so we did lots and lots and lots of tummy time to help her practice rolling and get her comfortable with being on the tummy.

Around 4-5 months for both of mine, once they could roll over to their tummies on their own. Occasionally I'd let them for a nap if they were right by me.

@rosegold: I think the monitors can ease some anxiety, but I don't think it makes sense to do something you otherwise wouldn't do because you have the monitor.

Our ped gave us the go ahead to put T down on his stomach at 10 weeks old. He can roll over no problem and is really strong, with great head control. He was struggling on his back (she said he was very reflux-y in that position) and it seems to have drastically improved his reflux, too. He's two feet away from me in a pack n play. We also moved him to a sleep sack. He's so much happier with his hands by his face

The general consensus usually is if they can get in their tummy, they can stay on their tummy. I wouldn't put babe down that way though. Personally, I also would never trust any monitor - they are not regulated as medical devices and thus are not held to any standard. I think it's a false sense of security.

every professional says not within their first year, but the internet seems to be leaving it up to the baby. thoughts, experience, bees?

my one month old definitely prefers his stomach but i am terrified to leave him like that when he goes down for the night. asleep by 830/9, i flip him around 1030 and he's up to nurse around 1130/12 and he stays in bed with me until about 2am. then i get some solid sleep. i did a lot of cosleeping with my first (she's 5 now) and i'm pretty sure I didn't leave her on her belly until she was about 6m. i think i will do the same with boy but it's obvious he's so much happier than she was sleeping on the belly.
