Well we've had locks on our cabinets for years...but those are to keep the cat out  ! I don't really plan to do any baby proofing until it is needed.

We didn't do much baby proofing with DS other than cover outlets and cover a few sharp corners. He understood and obeyed the no touching rules that I repeated over and over when he became mobile and we've never had a problem (he's now 3).

We started when he was about 6 months, so a month before he was full on crawling. We started small, like with replacing our ottoman for something that was stuffed and had no sharp corners and then did the outlets, put plugs away, etc. He's 19 months later and we're still baby-proofing things - it never stops :)

R is 7 months old and we've only done outlet covers. She can't crawl yet. Oh, we also have a gate between the kitchen and dining room but that's also for the dog.

I need to do a few things now (at 6 months), because she can sort of army crawl-shuffle around and she LOVES to chew on cords. So I just need to make sure that we pick things up for now.

We haven't done anything yet at 6 months. We did anchor 2 bookshelves to the wall when we moved in but otherwise we will just watch what she gets into when she gets mobile.

@rattles: do you have a pic of the fireplace?

@Dandelion: Makes sense to me! I don't know why you'd want to fuss with child-proof locks and gates any longer than necessary!

I didn't do it until she started getting into stuff. We did the stairs before she started to crawl over there, though. That was important to me. But we just did the cabinet under the sink a month ago (where the oil and chemicals are) because she became obsessed with them. And the fireplace got done as soon as she got interested in that area (where we store her toys, too, so that's our bad)

@rattles: I think I did that with DS, actually. I just fixed things as I saw that he had a problem with them.

We definitely just handled things as they came. I'd rather keep an eye on her and find a balance between baby safe and adult friendly. She's 14.5 months, and we didn't do anything until she was mobile at 8 months. Even now, all we've got is one baby gate (for the fireplace), one cabinet lock and outlet plugs.

I laughed a bit at my pregnancy app when I was 26 weeks, because it was telling me that it would be a good week to baby proof the house. I thought it was so early! 14 more weeks in utero, and then baby isn't usually mobile for another 6 months.

Do people really live with locks on their cabinets and plugs in their outlet that long? I'm guessing not!

We're moving in a few months, so we're not even going to deal with it in this house. I'll wait until he's almost crawling. :)
