Erm, I think LO was 5 weeks old before her first non-hospital bath. She had some really minor sponge baths in the meantime. She just didn't seem that dirty and I didn't bother! Plus good skin microbiome and all that...also I am lazy, ha! She still only gets 2-3 baths per week now at 8 months.

We bathed my son when he was maybe 4 or 5 days old and I wish we had waited. He hated it and really, it's not like babies are that dirty!

We skipped the bath in the hospital and did sponge baths only once or twice until 2 weeks old when the umbilical stump fell off. You do need to keep the stump dry so it can heal (needs a dry environment). We now bathe weekly.

We put him in the baby tub, but just made sure his belly/umbilical cord was above water level and didn't get too wet.

What kind of tub are you using? We used a baby tub w/ a sling so she could have a sponge bath. DD2 needed one almost daily from the time we got her home because she had such bad blowouts and reflux.

DD is 12 days old and we've given her 3 baths (plus the one they gave her in the hospital). The first two were sponge baths and she got a real bath yesterday since her cord has fallen off.

@MrsBrewer: This is what our hospital told us as well. We give her a sponge bath 2x a week, and avoid her belly button area. Her first bath was at the hospital at 1 day old, and then we have her one at home maybe 4 days later?

Not till 10 days after, I think? I just wiped her down with a washcloth until her stump fell off. DD2's took forever! Hospital said no submerging until it fell off. I think I gave it another day or two past that for it to dry off a bit more.

Well our hospital just said not to submerge her in water until the cord fell off. But you can give sponge baths!

With our son (in the US), they said not to bathe him until the cord fell off.
With our daughter (in Austria), she had several baths at the hospital and they didn't have any bathing restrictions. We didn't really bathe her that much the first few weeks though because she was born in the winter. I would just clean her with a warm wash cloth most of the time.

First bath was in the hospital at 2 days old. First bath that *we* gave her was (I think) around five days old. Since then we've done one bath per week. LO's doctor says that is just fine. You don't need to wait for the cord to fall off before bathing.

ds has been home four days now and i was told to wait for his cord to fall off before giving him a bath. he was circumcised just a few days after birth but i don't think anyone said anything about when he could or couldn't be in warm water.

thoughts? when did you bathe your newborn and how often do you?
