@Robyn_ZA: That is so cute!!! I love little footy onesies! I like what @Happygal: 's friend said "if you build it, they will come." At least occasional positive visualization seems to be helpful for me! FX that your IVF journey is fast and successful the first try! :goodluck: :goodluck:

@Happygal: You're being so brave! Please know that I'm thinking of you! And that was an amazing deal-- way to go for it!

I'm fairly superstitious, meaning I wouldn't buy stuff until later in a pregnancy. With our IF journey I also find it really hard to look at all the adorable baby stuff. The only thing I did buy was a onesie that says "My dad knows mom's the boss" for the day if/when I would ever get KU. If it doesn't happen then it will be a gift for someone else.

Before I was engaged, I would look at wedding websites in secret and even bought a wedding magazine that I hid under my bed. I didn't want buying baby items to be the same experience where I was doing it in secret and hiding things away. It wouldn't be as joyful for me.

With that said, if buying things feels hopeful and makes you happy, go for it! What you've purchased there is adorable. A friend of mine has an entire nursery set up and believes in the "if you build it, they will come," idea. There's obviously no right or wrong answer for this one.

My first baby item was purchased when I was very newly pregnant--I don't know if I had even had by 6.5 week ultrasound yet. I saw a Baby Bjorn babysitter bouncer for sale on Craigslist, along with a toy and cover, for $50! My husband still doesn't appreciate what an amazing deal that was. We've received a few gifts from our parents, but haven't bought anything else past that.

I have thought many times about how the phrase "ignorance is bliss" is probably never more true than during pregnancy. I think a missed miscarriage is the scariest thing to me. But I had this turning moment, luckily early on, during a workout class at the gym. As I was flailing around, the instructor was encouraging us to imagine kicking any anxieties or fears we were experiencing away. I went with it, and you know what? It helped! I thought about how we had tried for awhile and gone through a lot to get here, so it would be a shame to spend most of the pregnancy stressed and worried. And this is just the beginning--there will always be something to worry about with a child! I still have concerns (I did take a pregnancy test at 10 weeks), but I try to enjoy the moment as much as I can. We've started telling people, and that has definitely made it more exciting!

So I did it, I bought 1x gender neutral newborn onesie  I did a quick scope and grabbed the first one that caught my eye without hinting at males or females. It felt weird to be in the baby section...still felt like I was shopping for a gift!

I showed DH and he blew my socks off by thinking it was super cute  He even commented on the size of the feet!

It ended up being a Peter Rabbit/Beatrix Potter onesie which prompted DH to have a fond memory lane trip - turns out his late Gran bought him all the B. Potter books and used to read them to him when he was a child. Oddly enough, my Gran bought me a B. Potter bowl and kiddies cutlery which my Mom has been keeping for her future grandchild

All in all, I'm glad I made the purchase :)

For some women it helps to buy things to help them imagine and dream about having their future babies. For me, I couldn't even get near baby stuff until our 4th month of pregnancy. Then it finally occurred to me that this was really happening and I could buy something! My husband and I bought just one onesie at that time and hung it up so that we could see it daily. After our 20 week ultrasound when we found out the gender, then we started buying lots of things.

If it will help you, I say go for it!!! :) Can't wait to hear how your upcoming IVF appt. goes!!!

Oh man. I can completely understand! I was foolish and bought some second hand stuff when we were trying thinking it would be easy. :/ Well, I gave all that stuff away to a friend when we got our diagnosis and subsequent months got harder and harder. :/

If you're feeling a pull to get something and that will give you hope I say go for it. Allow yourself a chance to feel optimistic!

@Robyn_ZA: I completely understand how you feel. It is still so hard to wrap my head around how some couples decide to start a family and boom next thing you know, pregnant.

We went back and forth a lot of when the right timing was to start IVF. I chickened out a few times. It made me more anxious than excited. This time around, we are going through with it very soon and it feels much different. I just can't wait to get started. I actually feel like those people who decide to get pregnant and it happens. I feel like we are starting a family very soon! I haven't bought myself anything and probably won't until I'm actually pregnant but what I have allowed myself to do is work on my secret pinterest boards and pin pregnancy style, gender reveal ideas, pregnancy advise, ect. It all gets me excited and makes it feel real. It helps me keep hopeful that this is going to work with I feel is really important for me.

HB ladies are total champs, thanks to all for sharing your thoughts on the topic   You echoed my feelings so many times... which is just what you need when you're wondering if it's a sign of insanity to want to buy baby things for imaginary babies! haha.

For now, I think I'll buy one or two bits of clothes if I spot something that particularly catches my eye. And will make a space in a not often used drawer to keep these things in as some of you have :)

I started buying (very rarely) adorable baby things years before we started TTC. During my first (miscarried)pregnancy, I bought a couple of things...and now, pre-pregnancy, I will still admire, and occasionally buy, a really cute onesie or toy. For a while, it was hard not to feel superstitious, but now I'm viewing parenthood more as an eventuality-- we have an entire room in our house that is designated as a "potential baby" room and I have a drawer in my dresser that houses nothing of daily necessity...and pretty much all of my baby "hope chest." I think at some level, it would almost be more painful NOT to have the freedom to accumulate these things...although I can see how having large near-daily reminders (say, a bassinet or crib) might make me crazy. But that's just me...

@MrsTal: So glad you're doing well!

@Robyn_ZA: I'm sorry that IF has you feeling so exhausted... I say, do whatever brings you (even a little) joy and keeps you sane! If I have not offered already, please feel free to ask anything about my recent IVF cycle! Maybe you and DH can take some time to unwind, just the two of you, before your upcoming appt? and :goodluck: :goodluck: !!

@Robyn_ZA: I'm so glad you asked this! This is something I've been thinking a lot about lately. I really love sewing and knitting and have made so many fun gifts for friends. I have moments where I want nothing more than to knit or sew something for my future (hopefully) baby. But, I get so caught up and superstitious about it.

I also agree with what you said about it being a very sad reminder of IF.

Maybe a nice idea would be to do what @mrstal did by having a space under the bed or in storage to put baby items if you don't want to constantly see them or if things aren't going well? I think I may begin the knit baby blanket after all :)

For me, it took a long time to buy anything. After the first year of IF, I stopped looking for sales/deals, and by the second year, I started avoiding baby sections/stores all together. I don't think I made my first purchase until after the 20 week anatomy scan, except for a pair of shoes I bought for our annoucement.

The only thing I've bought is a tote that I *could* use as a baby bag (it wasn't even a baby bag either). I just got it about a month ago, so about 21.5 months into TTC. For me, I wont buy anything until it happens and well into the pregnancy. I won't believe that it actually CAN happen until it does cause right now, it seems impossible. I don't plan on making any sort of announcement if and when it happens either.... just plan on letting people find out as I get big enough for it to be noticeable.

@Sunshine1810: I know what you mean. I used to try not to 'jinx' myself, too. But in my journey, I've realized that our IF journey doesn't have any rules. Sadly, all of those 'TTC tricks' don't get us pregnant, so I don't believe in superstitions any more. We might not have luck in getting pregnant easily but (for me) I don't think buying a baby item will prevent us from getting pregnant. Infertility is way out of our hands. Time is the only thing I'm waiting for. It will come. At least, this is what I think at this time. Ask me in about 2 weeks when I POAS. I'm sure I'll change my tune.

Now, emotionally, if it's hard to see baby stuff, it is completely understandable. But for me, buying things helps me.

I haven't bought a single thing in the 2+ years that we've been TTC and dealing with IF. I love looking at baby things, and I get my "fix" by buying stuff for friends/family's babies, but I just can't buy anything that's intended for my future baby. Like you mentioned, being a parent just feels so abstract to me, like it's something that happens to other people, so buying a onesie for my future baby would sort of feel like, I don't know, buying a size 00 dress because who knows, maybe one day, I might need it.

We have been TTC/battling infertility for 3 years. I have only purchased one baby related item. I got the Kate Spade diaper bag I love because they pattern was being discontinued and I got it for less than half price. I love it. Up until that point I didn't buy baby related items because I was being silly and superstitious and thought I would "jinx" myself if I bought things (crazy, I know).

For me, it took me a while, but now that I have baby stuff, I'm using it as motivation that I will become a mom. 2014 will be my year and hoping I can become pregnant by the time I turn 31 (in 3 months).

I think early in my IF journey, I thought it would hurt seeing baby stuff but not be pregnant. So that kept me from buying things. I think paying for a psychic early this year made me a bit more motivated. I'm not into psychics and I guess after TTC for over 15 months, I decided to spend a few bucks ($12) to see what she said. I understand she could be wrong but I see a 'goal.' I buy things that don't expire soon. I buy things that are a good deal, so I am saving money and not buying things at full price. Some people say you should save that money and buy things when you get pregnant. But through my IF journey, I've coped by buying clothes, crafts, anything to get my mind off of all the :bfn: cycles. Now, I'm using that money towards baby supplies. It's keeping me distracted and motivated. It's not wasteful because most of the stuff will be used and if I don't use it, I can try to sell it here on the classified or gift it to friends.

My collection is growing, it's not anything big like cribs and strollers, but smaller consumable things like cloth diapers, baby bottles, pregnancy pillows.

Honestly, it took me until I started feeling him regularly to relax a bit about the pregnancy. I didn't buy anything until around 20w, and even then it was just because Target was having a sale, not because I was ready.

When I was still battling IF/MCs I bought absolutely nothing, it was too painful for me to even be in the baby section of a store.

I started buying stuff during my second year of IF when things were getting really hard. It was sort of a way to help me cope by helping me imagine that we would one day use these baby items. After I bought something, I would put it into storage under our bed so I dididn't have to look at it all the time but knowing it was there was like a little beacon of hope.

I'm pregnant now and while it's still early (8w5d) I'm starting to relax a little bit. I was a nervous wreck until we saw the heartbeat at 6w5d. I started lightening up a little after that and now that we saw our little bean again on Monday and everything is growing on track I'm starting to feel a little less anxious and believing we will have our little miracle in February.

ETA: I hope you get your BFP soon and that IVF is successful for you!

This may be a bit of a ramble, so bear with me.

While working through the emotions on the IF ride, what still annoys me about our dud hand in the fertility dept is what it's robbed us of as a couple. That initial rush of excitement when you have the chat and both agree to a fat "let's do this baby thing" fades away pretty thoroughly after the first year of trying.

Having a baby/being parents feels so far away and foreign that we cant even contemplate it. I don't mind seeing people with babies or pregnant woman, it's feel like it's something that happens to other people and will continue to. I feel so flat about what should be a pretty exciting time for any couple.

We don't have names in mind. We haven't priced a crib or a stroller. We haven't thought about a nursery. For now it just feels like I suddenly have a lot more medical appts than usual, and we're both not as happy as we used to be. We're not eagerly and nervously waiting to be parents as you do when you conceive on your own together. It's tragic that the worry of IF cancels everything out

DH and i chatted about it, he said when he sees/hears a heartbeat it'll begin to feel real. His can appreciate the miracle of science that ivf is, but says he's boggled by the situation and asked that I just let him know when to do his bit and when we're doing well

As much as I want to be pregnant, I'm also nervous to be ... it'll be such a worry filled 9 months! I'm going to be addicted to ultrasounds

For now I'm passing time till the first IVF appt 29-07, and hoping that our time there will make us feel like we're in the run to be parents. There are these babygros (and small kids tshirts) for sale at a local market that I have always loved. Whenever somebody has a baby shower or a small kid's bday, I buy them something from there.

I've been having this urge to go and buy one. Like it might help me imagine the possibility of somebody filling it in future. But on the other hand, I feel like it's tempting fate and it may end up being this stark reminder of our IF.

Has anyone still battling IF purchased anything? And to the ladies who are pregnant/ finally had their babies, when did you relax a bit and enjoy the process?
