DD took her first steps today! Grandma watches her during the day and when I went to pick her up grandma told her to walk towards me and she did right into my arms! It was only a couple small steps but I was pretty excited! :)

Thanks everyone :)

@Dagny: haha, that's actually what prompted this thread. K has been taking 2 steps from the couch to me for a couple days now and DH and I have been debating on whether they are her first steps or not.

@skipra: I like this. Since today was the first time we both saw it happen, these will probably go down in the books as her first official steps.

@lovehoneybee: good descriptions, she's been doing the whole "catching herself from falling with her feet" for about a week. These steps were a little different, but they took a lot of coaxing, and as soon as she realized we were getting excited, she lunged face first into me.

We count him as having taken his first steps when we both saw them happen. He technically took his first steps around 10.5 months because he was trying to chase after his cousin but only my sister and DH saw so they didn't count. On the day he turned 11 months he took a couple steps in the bathroom towards the bathtub but DH missed it. So it was probably the next day that we got him to take steps back and forth between us that we counted it. He could take probably about 10 steps at a time. It wasn't for a couple weeks until he was mostly walking rather than crawling - once he figured out how to stand up without pulling up on anything.

We counted first steps as intentional, "controlled" steps without holding onto anything. When he was 9.5 months old he "walked" between me and D...about 3 steps without holding on top anything, but it was more like...not falling? Catching himself from falling with his feet? Not controlled, not intentional at all.

What we count as his first *real* steps a month later were very intentional...he let go of my hands, looked at D, took a step, stopped, took another step, stopped, and then very slowly and carefully took the last few steps into D's arms.

DH and I have had a lot of discussions about milestone requirements (he wanted them outlined haha). We considered first steps when he took a step unassisted, without holding on to something. We considered it, 'starting to walk', when he took four consecutive steps unassisted. He took his first steps around 8 months and just started walking at 10 mo., so I'm not sure how much longer it will take until he is really walking all over the place.

I counted first steps as the day she literally took a step without holding anything or anyone for support. It was about a month and a half between first steps and exclusive walking for her.

We say that he took his first step when he did just that--without holding on to anything, took 2 steps toward DH, at 12.5 months. About 4 days later, he took 4-5 steps in a row. About a week after that he was walking pretty much everywhere! That's when we said he was walking.

When did you count your LOs first steps? When they could move their feet without holding into anything? When they could actually control themselves as they took steps?something different entirely? And how soon after did they actually walk?

Over the last few days K had started taking like half steps towards me or her dad in assisted. I'm not sure if that "counts" as her first steps? I definitely wouldn't call her walking, but it's so exciting watching her figure it out!
