I told my boss at 12 weeks, and told HR at the same time so that I could get all of the details of my maternity leave. I've told my boss a million times that I'm going to be out for 12 weeks, but yesterday he tried to tell me that I only get 6. Um, no.... I get 12, thank you very much.
I'll do all of the paperwork to put things in writing in the next couple weeks (I'm 32 weeks now)

I told my manager at 18 weeks. But my maternity leave was discussed much later on.

I'm kind of overwhelmed about what to do about it. I'm definitely not coming back full time, maybe part time or maybe not at all, but I'm afraid if I tell them that they will cut my short term disability benefits, so I don't know what I'm going to do.

I'm in New Zealand and over here we have legislation governing how long we can take off for maternity leave (14 weeks for those employed between 6-12 months, 52 weeks for those employed more than twelve months).

We legally have to give an employer at least three months notice of the intention to take maternity leave but I started discussing it with my boss at around three months. Ironically enough even though I started talking to my Boss in March, I have less than eight weeks left at work and my work is still not any closer to replacing me!

I talked about maternity leave when I told my supervisor that I'm pregnant at 18 weeks. I told her that I intend to take 4 months off. She said that sounds like a long time. I reminded her that FMLA covers 3 of those, so she thought it was fine. I have a little over 12 weeks vacation and sick time, which is how we get paid while on leave. I could probably take longer (more would be unpaid), but then I wouldn't be able to return to my actual position. I would still have a job with the same pay, but it would be less desirable.

As soon as I got the Dr's confirmation and let my bosses and coworkers know. My situation was a little different because I was the only full time instructor and decided to go down to part time as soon as I came back from maternity leave. They needed to start working on my replacement immediately- it still took them until 2 weeks before my due date to get everything hashed out.

@ladyfingers: I hope they give you the 12 weeks. That's nice that they cover FMLA even though they're not required.

I know my company's paid maternity leave policy, but I haven't addressed the fact that I plan to take unpaid FMLA with my boss yet. My company just went through a huge merger, and my boss is from the "other" company. I heard it was frowned upon in their company before to take the extended FMLA so I'm kind of dreading dropping that bomb. I will have 2 months paid, and then plan to take up to 3 more months unpaid. I know they're not going to be happy.

@mrskc: All I want is 12 weeks (6 under short-term disability, 6 unpaid under FMLA). I can't be out for longer, we can't afford it. Hopefully they'll be cool with 12 weeks!

My boss took about 6 weeks, but she had planned for 8. Our administrative assistant, who was covering for her in her absence, got horrible kidney stones and was out for a month, so she felt like she had to come back early. But she's the CEO and has her kids at the office with nannies watching them, so it's a little different. I'm hoping she would see the benefits of 12 weeks in my situation.

I'm 25 weeks now and haven't discussed my maternity leave yet. I'm feeling like now is a good time to get it worked out. My situation is similar to yours. They don't really have a policy in place and no one has been pregnant in 8 years. I know I can push for the 12 weeks (6 weeks disability & 6 weeks paid family leave), but would love to take off longer unpaid. I'm just scared they're going to tell me no!

sounds like your company has <50 people? if so, i believe that they are not required to give you maternity leave. Do they have a policy in place already? If not, I would do some research on other companies that are your size and see what they are offering their employees. Maybe 2-3 data points that you can use to help them establish a policy for you. My company is <50 people, so they had to create a policy for the first woman that went on maternity leave and I think she brought it up when she announced which was around the 12-13 week mark. I'd also try to give them as much notice as possible so they can plan for when you are out.

I told my boss at like 8 weeks just so he knew why I was feeling under the weather, but we did not inform HR until much later (like 18 weeks.) I met with our HR rep about FMLA and benefits at 27 weeks to hash out the details and get my paper work ready for when the time comes. So I'm ready to go (but hopefully not until I get closer to my due date obviously!)

I notified HR that I'd be taking maternity leave eventually after I told my boss (13w). I started discussing maternity leave details at 30 weeks and just today (33w) ironed out all the details. We do have a policy in place, it was just really confusing with the different state and federal leaves combined with the different state pays plus what my company covers, etc.

I discussed both at the same time. I wanted to introduce the idea as early as possible, so that I (and my bosses) could make arrangements that would best accomodate my plans.

ETA: I did a global disclosure (to all my partners) at 12 weeks.

I told my boss I was pregnant at 12 weeks. My yearly review is tomorrow (21 weeks) and I expect we'll discuss my maternity leave at that point. The only other person in my office that has had a baby is my boss's wife, so kind of similar to your situation.

I told my boss I was pregnant when I found out at 5 weeks! I didn't talk to him about maternity leave until I was 7.5 months pregnant. He pretty much asked me how much I time I wanted off (unpaid) and then said OK, done!

Did you discuss maternity leave with your employer at the same time that you told them you were pregnant? If you waited until later, when did you have that conversation? This is if your company did not have a clear policy outlined.

My boss already knows I'm pregnant (I told her at 6 weeks) and she said we would just discuss leave later on once I was out of the first trimester. I want to bring it up at an appropriate time, because I'm not sure what they're open to. I'm definitely coming back afterwards, but the only person who's had a baby while working here is my boss, who owns the company lol.
