I live in nyc. My kids are 4 and 2.5. We never really used a double stroller regularly. It's been the Cruz with a boogie board until before Christmas. now we use the maclaren plus scooter or bike or walking. Or two kids on scooters (which is madness). Both kids are good walkers and I think they walk several miles a day plus park play. My 4year old is huge and doesn't really fit in the stroller or on the boogie board anymore. I never liked a double stroller, but we had a double umbrella when they were little for long outings. We also has a city select double which was just a plain and wet never used it. We ar often out all day and they do just fine.

We live in NYC and take very long walks (on weekends sometimes we'll set off in the morning and walk nearly all day, with breaks for meals!). We had a double stroller, which our son used until he was around 4.5. I didn't think he would have the stamina for our walks, but we brought a single stroller with us on vacation by necessity, and he ended up being fine walking long distances (with short breaks to rest his legs from time to time). After that we gave up the double and switched to a single. We never had a ride-on board, and to be honest I'm glad, because I think not having that option made him a better (and more willing) walker. Even at 6, many of his friends still rely on ride-on boards on their siblings' strollers (and it's kind of annoying to push a stroller with a board in the way). So I would vote for keeping the double until your son is fine just walking (probably in the 4s), and then switching to just a single!

I'm in a city too and have a 4 year old and 1 year old. The 4 year old isn't completely out of the stroller depending on the activity. We walk almost everywhere; the ride on board is a lifesaver. She even rides in the seat sometimes and I wear the baby if we are having an exceptionally bad day.
We have a city select lux with a ride on board and a bench seat. I really liked the bench seat because it has a 3 point harness. In crowds or really long walks she gets an actual seat that fits her and the baby still has his seat. Its a beast to push though. But more often we use the riding board. Don't cheap out if you go this route though. You could pick up a used vista or city select; bugaboo makes a great board but their seats are on the smaller size so you might not get as much use as the other two.
We also have a thule urban glide; they can both smash in to the seat tandem style but the baby hates that now. Some kids can ride in the footwell of a Bob but again, its not a permanent solution.

@justjules: Yeah, I can't wear my daughter for very long. She's at least 27 pounds and I usually have a backpack on as well.

It can be great for a twenty minute walk home from the park when my five year old is refusing to cooperate and has to be strapped to the stroller.

My kids are 4.5 and 12mo, so my older son was 3.5 when the baby was born. My big boy pretty much stopped using a stroller at 3. Also in a city where all we do is walk (school is almost a mile and we walk both ways).
I kept our big uppababy for the baby and got a ride-on board for the big kid. He can honestly walk anywhere at this point but if I have both of them with me I prefer for him to be on the board because then I can walk at my own pace.
If I were you I would get a stroller with a board option (citymini has one). If your 3.5yo isn’t huge like mine, you could also get the ride-on attachment for the yo-yo. I’m obsessed with the yo-yo and just got it for this baby and it’s lived up to all the hype. If my 4.5yo wasn’t a beast I would have gotten rid of the UB Vista by now and just kept the yo-yo.

We will move to the burbs this summer and I will likely get rid of the uppababy then and just keep our yo-yo and maybe buy another less expensive umbrella.

@Woolly Mammoth: baby wearing was clutch for us in the early years! I used to wear DD all the time but now at almost 2 she is too heavy for long days :(

@Anagram: the folding is a big thing for me since I have to fold it to get into our apartment and often up a set of stairs. Ive looked at similar types like that one. I think Phil and Teds has one too

@lamariniere: yes- winters are so much tougher for kids to walk. I can see DS wanting to start walking again this summer and then when the weather is cold again, wanting to ride. He will be a little past 4 next winter so I don’t know if I should hold onto the double till then

@ChitownRo: yes. Ive thought about single with ride board! You said you would keep a double till 3... DS is 3.5 now so I don’t know how much longer we will keep the big double.... its just a slight pain for how much bigger it is

I would love to still have my double now (my kids are 5 1/2 and almost 2). I had to get rid of it last fall because we wanted to park our new car in the garage and there wasn't enough space for both.

I've had to get creative with transportation. We do a lot of walking down the hill and taking the bus back up.

If I'm counting on my son to walk, I'll sometimes take the ergo with me so worst case scenario I can strap him to the stroller and carry the toddler.

My kids are 3.5 and 5.5 and I would still take our stroller if we had a really big walking day ahead of us. We got rid of our bigger inline double stroller about 2 years ago when one seat broke and we bought a chicco Bravo-for-2, which has a cool built in ride-on-board for your older kid plus s fold down jump seat in the back.

The push is not near as good as the expensive strollers especially as your kids get older and weigh more. But you can fold it with al the parts attached (unlike the aftermarket ride-on boards or little jump seats), so that part is clutch. Plus, where we live, the stroller is as much for all the stuff as it is for the kids—the snacks and water bottles and bags and gear and groceries.

My kids are 3 years apart and we only ever had a single (big city and no car until a year ago). My older LO used the ride on board or a scooter, but I kicked him off of the ride on board when he turned 5 because it was getting too heavy to push two kids and a 26lb stroller. The result is that my older LO is an amazing walker. Even at 4, he could walk several miles at a time and he has never ever complained. We ended up moving to a huge city when my younger LO was almost 4, but because we live in a developing country, the sidewalks are often non-existant or broken or tiny, so I sold the stroller before we moved. If we had stayed, I would definitely have kept the stroller for my younger LO until she was 4.5 or so (I would have wanted it for winter/school pickups).

I’d stick to the double — mainly for the storage underneath (groceries etc)

Or a really solid single with standing board for the older LO

We moved to the surburbs but can still walk places. I plan to keep the big, sturdy stroller until my youngest is 3 yo

We live in a major city where we walk everywhere- park, grocery store, classes, everywhere.

DS is currently 3.5- at around 3 he was pretty comfortable walking 15min there and 15min back which got us to most of our destinations. When the winter hit, he started to sit in the stroller more. We currently have a MB duet (DD is 23mo).

Here is what I think my options are:

1. Keep the double stroller- this is appealing because when we do long days, both kids nap in the stroller, its nice to have both strapped in while we are waiting for the train, etc

2. Get a single and scooter
I know most people in the city start their kid on a scooter at this age but the problem is DD would also want to scooter and I can see her throw a fit every time she has to get strapped in while DS gets to scooter

3. Single stroller and walk
What I’m leaning towards but I worry that there will be days where he gets tired and cranky and I no place to stick him

If you live in a major city and mostly walk- when did you LO move on from the stroller?
