We did ours at 8 days old. They came out beautifully - she still looked "newborn", not "baby"-like yet :)

I would have liked to do them before a week but dh didn't have time so we ended up getting them done at 1 1/2 weeks and it made a big difference. Like coco bee said, she was more awake and didn't want to hold still for really cute poses :(

We did ours at 6 weeks, our photographer recommended then. We didn't want shots of LO asleep in a flowerpot. We got beautiful photos of LO -alert and looking at the camera. LO was a reasonable size at birth.

We got ours when DD was 8 days old which was ideal because she changed so much within just the first few weeks.

We did ours at 6 days. As others have said! Photog suggests before 10 days old so they are good and sleepy. She was only 6lbs6ozs on the day of our shoot but she still looked like a sweet little angel baby. http://slpphotos.blogspot.ca/2012/03/baby-evelyn-6-days-old.html

my lo was 6 days old when we did her newborn photos:
http://www.pistolsandpearlsphotography.com/
she's the third one in the automatic slideshow, in the red & aqua.
she was 9lbs, 13oz at birth, though, so she did have some meat on her

my photog recommended taking the photos no later than 10 days, though, I think is what it was. 14 at the latest, b/c infant acne & a lot of other things start showing up after that. plus, like a pp said, they don't sleep as deeply & aren't as malleable. plus that scrawniness is part of the newborn aspect, isn't it, for babies that aren't just big? if your so wants some photos w/ meat & whatnot, why not wait until your lo is able to support themselves sitting up & take some photos then? that would be really fun & would make for some great photos as well

Our newborn photographer prefers the baby be 6-10 days old and really suggests no older than 10 days (with the exception of medical reasons like NICU).

Thanks for the suggestions! Seems like under 2 weeks is best. DH and I were both small babies (me 5 lb 7 oz, him 6 lb) and so I'm expecting him to be a peanut! Hopefully he'll have some chubb : )

10 days. That's what the photographer suggested. She was 8 lbs 13 oz at birth. She had plenty of meat on her bones.

We did them at home ourselves at 4 weeks pp. If you get them professionally done, I know photographers like shooting babies between 10 days-2 weeks old.

I had my son photographed at 2.5 weeks and I would say no later than that. he was actually a little tough to situate because by that age they don't sleep as deeply as they do that first week, so whenever we tried to get him into cute positions he'd wake up, or stretch and squirm. Basically he ruled the shoot lol there wasn't much "posing" involved cause he'd never stay how we positioned him. He was awake most of the time, and even when I tried nursing him to sleep, he'd wake up once we started moving him.
It was funny, but we missed some shots we wanted to try because he wouldn't sleep deep enough.
I've seen most babies have theirs done between 5-7 days. I know it seems early lol

My LO hasn't arrived yet either but one of the photogs I spoke with said 7-10 days (which seems too soon), and the one I'm using said 2-5 weeks. I scheduled mine for 2 weeks after my due date.

I guess, in general, they say the earlier the better since they sleep more and it's easier to photograph them?

When did you do your newborn photo session? Within the first week? First two weeks? First month?

Sometimes newborns are tiny/skinny little things and part of me wants to wait until LO has a little meat on his bones to take them. (He's not born yet, just thinking ahead).
