@Bubbles: we stopped bottles at 12 months and switched to a sippy of milk at bedtime. My favorite are the munchkin straw ones. I find they don't really leak and are easy to clean. I have had a few break but they are over a year old.

@Bubbles: irrational fear is the perfect way to describe how I feel, too.

LO is 13 months now and he still gets a bottle first thing in the morning and about an hour before bed. He doesn't get one at all during the day or if he wakes up in the middle of the night. I'm hesitant to stop them because there's no way I can have breakfast ready for him when he first wakes up, I enjoy the snuggles, and that's where he gets the majority of his WcM from

Wow thanks so much for all the replies, it is great to know that there is a really wide range of normal!
Those who switched to sippy cups, any recommendations? We use a b box straw cup for water, but I'm not confident that it can be cleaned well enough for milk usage!

Hmmm, we kept the bottle before bed until she was like 20 months old. She just had the one bottle before bath time after dinner, not during the day anymore and one day we just stopped and she never asked for it again even though she really seemed to enjoy having the warm milk. I was surprised she wasn't attached to it! I was also told to stop but for dental reasons. I didn't stop though because I always brushed her teeth AFTER the bottle, so I didn't see what the big deal was. I don't think there's any rush but the one change I would recommend is to brush teeth after the bottle cuz I've heard some pretty scary stories about cavities in toddlers and I'm not too thrilled about holding her down at the dentist's office! At 22 mths though we are still nursing in the morning upon wake up, and sometimes not at all.

Wow my pedi and dentist didn't seem to mind what we do.

We give LO a sports bottle sippy cup (it's pretty much a bottle with a sport spurt) about an hour before bed. We do this because he likes to lay back on his toddler couch while watching his toons while we clean up. He's 2.5 years old and we have done this since he was 1.5. I guess since we do it an hour before bedtime that's okay?

He has a straw cup the rest of the day but when we are out we bring both a straw cup and a sport sippy cup. :)

I am bad. We didn't stop until 18 months-ish. And my just-two-year-old still gets a bottle of milk when he wakes up. So bad!!! At night - we just switched it with water and it was fine, then we did nothing. He's not ok with dropping the morning one. We need to do it.

We slowly weaned off the bottle during the day and by 15-16 months we were able to transition from a bottle at night to a sippy cup. So he still got his milk before bed, just in a cup and not a bottle. Didn't mess with our routine at all.

haha I feel so unnormal after reading these responses! B is 16 months and I still give her a bottle at bedtime. Ok, Ok, I give her a bottle at nap as well. She takes a straw cup of water really well during the day, but for some reason it's never crossed my mind to stop the bottle. I guess my main reason is she's pretty small still and doesn't eat a lot most days so I feel like she needs the calories?

We moved to cups at about 10 months and moved the bedtime milk into a cup at about 12 months but E still gets a bottle if she wakes in the night because she needs the comfort. She's 16 months and I don't think its the end of the world.

@Bubbles: we just got rid of a bottle every week or two. First was the wake up bottle. Then he dropped morning nap so he just got one bottle before his nap. Then we got rid of the nap bottle. Then eventually bedtime. Replaced bottle with a straw cup at the same times and sometimes he drank it, sometimes he didn't. Eventually he just started drinking milk with meals (or when he asked).

Around 9 months we were having trouble fitting everything in before bed time. We had switched up our routine so the bottle wasn't last before bed. So it was tough doing dinner early enough to get him to take a bottle, and yet not suck to sleep. We'd be scrambling for dinner, then scrambling to get the bottle into him, and if things went to late he'd be falling asleep with the bottle. With our ped's ok we just stopped giving it to him and did a sippy of milk or formula at dinner instead.

@Bubbles: I scrub her teeth after her bottle with the little finger swiffies (or whatever they are called. I got them from my dentist). I'm not *too* worried about cavities, because LO has good genes in that area. Neither Dh nor I have ever had a cavity (hard teeth, I guess), and Lo has already been to the dentist and her teeth are totally fine so far.

I'm with you, what does it matter if the sucking calms her down and relaxes her?! We brush her teeth afterwards and then read books together in her bed before I tell her goodnight. I think our routine of milk + cuddles before all that is nice, I'm in no hurry to get rid of it

@Anagram: tbh I thought that a lot of people held onto them for longer! I guess I am also afraid he will drink less and wake up hungry, although he is not starving when he wakes up now. He uses a straw cup with meals and he drinks usually 2-3 oz of water throughout the day - I haven't tried yet to see how much hed drink if there was milk in there!

@lawbee11: this is a very good point, I guess the longer he has it the more attached he will get! I currently brush his teeth before, but could easily switch up to brush them after.

We cut the bedtime bottle cold turkey at around 12.5-13 months. I was really worried but it went smoothly and was much easier than I imagined it would be. I think one of the concerns is cavities. If you're brushing your LO's teeth after the bottle then I would imagine this to be less of a concern. IMO the longer they get the bottle, the harder a habit it is to break, so that's why I just wanted to rip the band-aid off.
