We went out the second day! In underwear! DS was 2.5 when we trained and we just kept asking him over and over of he had to go. He didn't have any accidents. We also don't drive though, so didn't have to worry about car emergencies (but had to worry about stroller emergencies!).

@skipra: we left the house on the 2nd day for quick errands. If we went to target LO went to the BR when we left home, when we got to target, then before we left again. She did great also!

@skipra: she is 32 months now and was 27 when we potty trained. If it has been a while since she went, I sometimes suggest it. Worst case I just announce that I need to go potty and she comes with me and then usually decides she will go too.

@irene: I wonder if you need to have accidents to get used to hoing in public? Good luck!

@looch: lol that is what I'm trying to do!

@Weagle: Seems like DS is a little picky too. He will go for me but not DH when we're out.

@MamaCate: I wish we could get our guy to better communicate that he has to go. I can usually tell by body language. How old is your LO? Mine is not quite 2 yet so I'm hoping this will get better.

@sandy: Good advice! I'm trying to avoid pull ups except for nap and bed because he would definitely go in one still.

@locavore_mama: that's great! We are almost a week in now. I just put DS in shorts or pants when we leave the house and so far no accidents! We've been on several walks, to the playground, grocery store, doctor's office, Target, DSW... I bet you can try going without the pull up!

We're a week into potty training and LO just started on Saturday telling me she needed to pee and poop every single time! We've been out but I put her in a pull up. She's surprisingly still told me every time she needed to go. I'm super impressed by how quickly she improved. I'm not sure when I'll be comfortable letting her out sans pull up. Maybe if she continues for at least another week me every time she needs to go.

I think we stayed home for a week before venturing out of the house. Then we did play dates at our friends' houses and I just made sure to take her to the potty every hour. Then we went to play gyms and stores where I knew there was a clean potty close by and again, I just watched her body language and watched the clock and took her to the potty about every 60-90 minutes. I tried putting her in a pull up, but that caused a major regression b/c it felt like a diaper and she would just go in it. So I never used pull ups in public...just nap and bedtime.

We ran some quick errands starting on day 2 of potty boot camp and have not had problems. LO likes the novelty of public bathrooms I think.

I did want to add what we do to help set LO up for success: she is stubborn so almost any time you ask if she needs to go potty, she will say no. Instead when we go to a store I will tell her at some point, "hey guess what? They have a potty in this store so if you need to go, just let me know." This frequently leads to a potty request in the next few minutes as LO is happy that it feels like her idea.

I don't know. I feel that we will never leave the house without the diaper :crying: So far LO only goes to the potty AT HOME at HIS potty. He hasn't peed or pooped at daycare on the potty, let alone outside in random bathrooms. We are 2.5 years old.

We left the house on day 2. Not for terribly long, but all was fine. We were going out and about like usual within just a few days. LO is pretty picky about where she will pee in public, but it's getting better and she's really good at holding it. She only poops once a day or every other day and it's never been out of the house or not at a friend's house. So we haven't really worked through that yet.

@Mrs. Jacks: good idea about the pad in the car seat. I will have to do that especially for longer trips!

@Mama Bird: I never even thought to pack a diaper in casr of emergency. Thanks for the tip! We're flying in a couple weeks so we'll have to put on a pull up for the flight. I hope that doesn't set him back.

We had to go to a couple stores today and luckily were accident free. I was impressed!

We're three weeks into potty training. We stayed close to home for a couple of weeks, but now we go out with a few sets of spare clothes and some diapers in case all the clothes get ruined. We just make sure there are bathrooms where we're going. One weekend we just kept DS in diapers when we went out, and it wasn't a good idea. No ruined clothes, but he went right back to peeing in them, so it was a step back!

The kid will not poo in a public bathroom though (quite understandable!) So we try not to go out for too long because of that.

We just brought clothes and went about our business. Putting an absorbent pad in the car seat will give you peace of mind. ( though somehow our babies knew not to have an accident in the car).

LO decided last week that we were potty training. So far he is doing great. He puts himself on the potty to pee almost every single time and to poop about half the time, but we can tell when he has to poop so we normally get him there. Only problem is that he just uses the potty but doesn't tell us he has to go so I'm afraid of taking him anywhere for too long. So far we've gone for a walk and stop at the playground (about a half hour total) and a few shorter car rides with no accidents. At what point can we actually leave the house to go shopping or something? Will I know when he is ready or is it just trial and error and bringing several changes of clothes?
