It depends on the place for me. I go to the library, music class.... Basically places that are in one room so my toddler can't run off. I baby wear most of the time, and I have a sit and stand stroller. If I am lugging a lot of stuff, ill usually wear lo and put the bags in the stroller.

@Maysprout: adding a pic of our setup with the wheel board. We've only had a little bit of ice this winter, so it hasn't been too bad using the stroller. So far I haven't worn DD very much because I feel like she stays warmer in the stroller.

@Maysprout: We have to strap Olive into the stroller to get anywhere... she is not a fan of the process! But has a blast when we get wherever we are going, so we call it a wash!!

@Mrs. Yoyo: Yeah, the tantrum is hard. She just started preschool so has been a little off. I can usually time when she's getting tired but starting school threw her off so that sucked when we were out and she decided to tantrum and we had to walk home still. She pulled herself together pretty good and it wasn't long but it instilled a fear of this could have been a lot worse.

@mrbee: Yeah my oldest is several months older than Olive and is very anti-stroller. Before baby came I would carry her when she got tired (which isn't often) but that's not working anymore since I'm carrying baby. It does make for some slow walks home though. And baby screams every time I've tried to put her in a stroller.

@Andrea: My oldest listens pretty good so luckily that isn't a problem but she is on the move. How did you balance nursing with helping the older one when at the library or museum? I feel like every time I start nursing my older one is needing help getting books off a shelf or has knocked puppets down and needs help picking them up. So I can't stop nursing or baby will scream, which seems bad at a library, but I'm awkwardly trying to stay covered while getting the older LO out of a jam. It just feels awkward and I'm sure looks really awkward.

I confess I've been rather wimpy about this. I can't count on my 2-year-old to not run or have a tantrum, and there's always the chance baby will need to nurse, etc. I will go certain places like the park or music class or the library that it's easier to wrangle both. But I avoid the mall, grocery etc if I can help it.

@Maysprout: My oldest liked to walk and I had the baby in the snap and go stroller. Now the baby is 13 months and I've ditched the stroller because she's been walking for a few months now. We live in the suburbs so I drive us to the library, play gym, children's museum, supermarket, etc. so I don't need a stroller once we get there. My oldest is good about not running away from me so I just have to keep an eye out on the baby as she wanders around.

@Maysprout: I used my Beco a lot with the baby, I'd even use it with the toddler. I have a double stroller, but DS doesn't mind being in it.

We use a double stroller, and take the kids out alone pretty regularly. The hard part is that our two-year-old daughter Olive is going through a "I hate the stroller" phase and wants to walk everywhere. It's hard to wrangle two toddlers if both aren't in the stroller... especially when they go running in the opposite direction.

@sarbear: @Andrea: What set up did you guys use?

We go out a lot it just doesn't feel easy yet. Like taking the 2 yr old to the potty is pretty awkward while baby wearing. I guess I need to convince one of them that strollers don't suck.

I didn't go out with both until the baby was a few months old. It. was also winter time and there wasn't much to do anyway. But once we started going out, it was pretty easy.

@Maysprout: I still used a stroller for my older kiddo, so I unloaded our gear in the basket. With my youngest, I put her in the Beco Gemini, it crossed over by back to give enough support to lift LO #1 into a shopping cart or to put him in the car, put the stroller away, etc.

@HLK208: What kind of baby carrier did you have? I like to baby wear because I can nurse her easier but I feel like it's awkward baby wearing and helping my toddler up on things - like at a playground or picking stuff off the ground. And then I'm not sure what to do with our extra gear when we take off coats and stuff.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: What's your set up when you go to the mall? With all the winter gear I feel like I have to get them undressed from the super cold and then we have this pile of cold gear to lug around with us.

DS was 15 months old when my daughter was born. I got out by myself at about 3 weeks(after all my help went back to work). I couldn't be cooped up inside. It's horrible in winter since I still have to keep close tabs on my son(now 21 months), since likes to run.
They probably started going more smoothly once dd was about 2-3 months old.

I have been trying to leave the house with both girls at least three times a week. My husband works long hours and we all go stir crazy if we dont get out!!! We go to play dates, the mall, grocery shopping, family's houses. I have got the hang of it now and lo is 10 weeks.

Geez, I don't think I could have handled both very well during winter, at least when LO #2 was new. I nursed before I left the house and baby wore while we were out so my hands were free with my toddler and it worked out well. By the time my LO was 8-10 weeks, I felt good about going out with both.

@lamariniere: What's a wheel board? I probably should try the stroller again. We've just been hit with so much snow and ice here that it's been a pain in the neck to navigate around with it. DD2 didn't like it so I ended up just pushing an empty stroller when we did try it out, but maybe she'll get used to it once she tries it more.

I actually found it to be ok pretty much right away. DS is 3 and DD is 9 weeks. We don't have a car though, so I use the stroller with a wheel board.

Between all the winter gear and a baby who wants to nurse a lot and a very active 2 year old, I feel a little stressed when it's' just me and the two of them out and about
.
When we're at home it's fine and I've been happy that it has been a pleasant adjustment from one to two. Even juggling two bedtimes when it's just me hasn't been bad. But going out and about, whew, I feel a little frazzled and I feel like I look a little frazzled.

When or what did you do to make solo outings with two go smoothly?
