thanks everyone! this was really helpful, I had looked on google and it said after the 2 week check up, so I hadn't thought about the 2 month immunizations yet but that is definitely a huge thing to consider!

8 months here, transatlantic flight. I honestly wouldn't fly until after the first round of shots. Airplanes are very germy places.

LO's first flight was at almost 10 weeks for a family reunion, she already had her 2 month vaccines a week before that flight. She did great, slept the entire way and received lots of compliments for being the best baby on the plane. The flight was during the summer, lots of family vacations were going on and the flight was full of crying children. It was only a 2 hour flight though so I don't know how well Babies could tolerate an international flight.

8 months for us, and a quick flight from LA to Vegas. She was squirmy at that age and decided not to nap at all that day!

Like LaMariniere said, you'll need to hustle on getting your travel documents. We paid to expedite the passport and it arrived in 2 weeks IIRC.

DS's first flight was at 6 months, and it was transatlantic. I think the earliest I would have flown was 3 months.

I don't think I would fly internationally with a baby that young unless absolutely necessary. There are vaccinations to consider. Also, you may not be able to obtain a passport that quickly. It took us 4 weeks to receive the birth certificate and, when we did apply for the passport when DS was 7-8 weeks, it took another 3-4 weeks to receive it. I'm sure there is a way to expedite papers, but I wouldn't count on it.

I think a baby that young would be fine (they'd sleep the whole time, most likely) provided they'd had their shots. Planes are germy things, and I would not have been comfortable with LO in an enclosed space with that many people before her shots.

I couldn't have tolerated a flight at 6-7 weeks post partum, so there's also that to consider!

I would not be comfortable flying with my LO until after the first round of vaccines at two months. We first flew with her when she was 3 months old and she did great!

@nana87: I would ask your pediatrician. Mine was super against plane travel until after 2 month vaccinations (especially the whooping cough vac). So I'm takin my LO on a flight to see my family in 2 weeks, when she is just under 3 months old.

They are the easiest to travel with in the 1st 3 months! :) They'll probably love sleeping on your chest and lap throughout the entire flight since they just want to be held all the time too! My only thing is if you plan to breastfeed you'll be nursing A LOT on the plane. Lots of diaper changes too.

I took both my kids when they were both 3 months.

How old was/will your baby be on his or her first flight? How young of an infant would you feel comfortable taking on a plane?

I just found out about a really amazing professional opportunity next summer, but it would involve an overseas flight and baby would only be like 6 or 7 weeks old (assuming all goes well and he/she is born around the edd...). Absolutely insane to even think about?? My mom and/or husband would come with me...
