I used it during labour when I was trying to induce contractions, then afterwards in the first week to try and start a freezer stash.

I used the hospital pump as soon as after my son nursed the first time. I had a c-section so that didn't happen until after I was in recovery. It helped tremendously with getting my milk in which was the second day. With my first I don't think I started pumping until a couple of days later and my milk didn't come in until the 4th day? or 5th? And then I struggled with supply for a couple of months. Sucked. I highly recommend pumping as soon as possible to help stimulate your milk, even if nothing is coming out.

Thanks, ladies. I have my pump and an just debating unpacking it now or waiting until after we get home from the hospital. Maybe unpack it, just in case.

Manual pump at day 5 after my milk came in and I was so engorged baby couldn't latch on. Electric pump I bought at 3 weeks I think and tried out then. I had oversupply though, so I didn't really use it much until I was away from baby for a few weddings/going back to work.

Probably not until day 5 or 6. I should have started earlier. My milk supply didn't come in, but I was way too stressed out with just basic baby care stuff to figure out how to sterilize, assemble, and operate my pump. I wish I had sorted out all of that stuff before the baby was born. In the end I tried everything to get my milk to come in, but it never did.

I started pumping on day 4 when my milk came in. DS was having trouble latching so I pumped exclusively and fed him breastmilk in a bottle for days 4 through 10 (when I was finally able to get an appt with a lactation consultant.

@autumnlove: wow that's a long time! I hated waiting for my milk to come in, I felt like LO wasn't getting anything!

I used a pump in the hospital!

I used a hospital pump in the hospital to encourage my supply. I kept pumping when I got home from the hospital and fed baby pumped colostrum/early milk via bottle/syringe because he ws low birth weight.

The only thing I would caution about pumping early is to not pump too much once your milk is in....I ended calling in a way oversupply (enough for twins!) Sounds great but it was too much milk for my LO to handle and he would choke/cough, etc. while drinking.

they had me pump at the hospital to encourage my milk to come in (though I had a ton of colostrum). I also have pumped a little before some BFing sessions to make it easier for LO to latch if I'm too engorged.

I also have a REALLY forceful letdown that chokes her, so I typically pump a minute and then let her latch to avoid gas later!

I first used it at 6 weeks.

I was at a hospital that is specially trained to promote breastfeeding and even though my little guy had jaundice that made him soooooo tired, they told me not to pump. They are all about the 'only baby and breast' beginning, straight through the first month.

Three hours after she was born, because she was in the nicu and I needed to get cranking on my supply. And then every three hours until day 5, when she latched and successfully breastfed. That's not the norm, though. Ideally you'd just breastfeed until your supply is fully established at 8 weeks.

I am curious about when most women start to use a pump. In the hospital? At home soon after you come home from the hospital? Also, I am planning on returning to work at about 12 weeks but definitely want to get the baby used to a bottle much before that and I know that pumping may also help my supply, especially early on.

Thanks for your thoughts!
