Just wanted to update and tell you all we got dd's ears pierced yesterday a little after 7 mos old. She did great. She cried maybe 5 minutes total but stopped when I picked her up. I ended up going to a piercing place that got great reviews on yelp and she did tons of infant/child piercing. It was $48 total, including the earrings.

@Crumbs: It's hard when you're already an "outsider" in an area that's so homogenous. Anything you do makes you stick out and people can be mean, especially kids to other kids!

I've seen babies with pierced ears in Switzerland, I personally don't care for it, but to each his own.

@s1lly: Her pediatrician doesn't, but others do. :) A lot of doctors do, even plastic surgeons. BUT doctors won't do it if they are sick. (we had to cancel appointments several times for that reason.lol)

Although LO isn't here yet, I know this will be an issue for us. It's the norm in my family to pierce a baby's ears and having the grandmother buy her first set of earrings. My Mom and aunts and cousins have already expressed their desire to see this happen.

However, it's not the norm where we live. In fact, I have never seen a Swedish baby with pierced ears and don't even know if they have places to have them done. I think most people will even regard it as abuse =/

My Mom would want to have our baby baptized in the States and I know the ear piercing will follow.

I'm torn because I actually want it done. I had my ears pierced as a baby, then later on as a teen and the ones done as a baby are practically invisible, even to the touch. I don't have to wear earrings, in fact I hardly ever wear them - but I appreciate having that option. The ones I had done as a teen have been problematic, upon touch, they're not smooth, although they've closed-up since.

If I do it, I know I'll face a lot of criticism here and would have to take the time to explain my stance to each and every person who asks. I'm not sure if it's worth the grief and scrutiny.

Yeah, I'm not sure. I see the reasoning for both sides. I think I'll have to see how I react when my kids gets shots in the arm. Also, if I want to deal with the upkeep of having them.

I think I got them as a young kid.

She got them done at 4 months. Wouldn't change it either. It was a good age because it was over quick and I can take care of them correctly.

I got hers done at the doctor's office. I felt better there than at the mall.

I had my ears pierced when I was a baby, too. My mom said that I didn't really cry, it healed very quickly, and because my mom has metal allergies, she only used high quality metals in my ears, so I never had reactions until I got older and tried to wear cheapo earrings. Because of this, I always thought I would get my child's ears pierced early was well. It's very common around me, and I actually don't think I know any baby girls without pierced ears.

And then I got a second piercing in college. It hurts! I don't know if it supposedly hurts less in babies because their ears are softer, but now knowing what it feels like, I'm second guessing myself on piercing a baby's ears.

Yeah I think there's definitely a cultural element to it- I've only rarely seen pierced babies here, and it makes me wince when I do see it! I'm too much of a chicken to go and get my own re-done - was done at 12, but I was allergic to pretty much everything so I got bored and let them close up - so I couldn't bring myself to have it done to a child who's not old enough to choose. I'm inclined not to let anybody near my children with needles and such unless medically necessary!

I think when it comes to any type of body modification it's best to leave it up to the persons body being modified. What if Grayson's ideal look as an adult woman is pristine, unpierced ears. I would feel awful taking that choice away from her since she is the one that will be affected by it, not me.

I got hers done when she was 5.5months old. I prefered to get it done early since they heal faster, don't remember the pain, and they are still too young to play with their ears and potentially pull out the earrings.I found it was easier to keep them clean etc too at this age because they are not moving around too much. They healed so nicely and she is now 7 months and no problems. I know a lot of people prefer to wait, but I think its great to get it done young. And they look soo cute!

Here (in Mexico) it is very common to pierce baby girls' ears... in fact, they offer it in the hospital just like circumcision. Earrings are a super common present for newborns and without earrings people kind of assume it's a boy (even if dressed in pink!!)

Although I would probably prefer to wait, I might have to go with it (when/if I have a girl). We'll see.

To each their own. A lot of people say they won't until they are older or you shouldn't until they can ask for it and that's fine but until you are the mother and in that situation you don't really know what you will want to do.
Do what you feel is right.
