We were pretty strict from the beginning, but we could be, because we only had one child and I was staying at home. We always woke him from naps if he slept past a certain point in the afternoon and pretty much always did a night time routine.

@reggie: I know this posting was about a month ago but I was wondering what your baby's sleep schedule was like? Or what your strict sleeping habits where like? My LO right now is 4 weeks and we don't really have him on a strict schedule. He basically sleeps and eats whenever he pleases. I try to wake him up to feed every 2-3 hours in the day time (also with more frequent feeds anywhere from 6pm-10pm) and at night I'll let him sleep until he wakes to feed (anywhere from 2-4.5 hours). As a new mom, I'm still learning/figuring out my baby's cues and trying different things. Any advice would be great!

I am also wondering what others do about this. Our lo's bedtime always changes depending on naps and lengths of naps.

@Rubies: I am so uptight with Eli's routine. Example- we are not bringing him over to my parents for chinese new year dinner because it's too late for him (dinner is at 8 and his bedtime is 6)... I'll make it up by bringing him to see them during the day haha

the only time we took him out later than his bedtime was when we had his 100 day banquet... it turned out OK because he just slept the whole time in his carseat... but I definitely would not mess up his schedule ever if i have control over it

Eli had an early bedtime very early on.... I would say at around 2 months he was going to bed before 7pm every night.

Maybe you won't have to sleep train Olive.. she is so young and you don't know if she will just turn out to be a great sleeper herself! esp when you are practicing good sleeping habits... We still didn't sleep train Eli at 5 months because we started practicing good sleeping habits since he was 5 weeks old... I remember when he was 3 months old... it was the worst... he would fight his naps... so hang in there! maybe you won't have to :)

I've heard that it's much harder to keep a schedule with #2 since you have to keep up the activity with #1. I think #2 is just going to have to be more flexible because you won't stay home a lot like you may have when #1 was a newborn.

I'd say we had a consistent bedtime for my LO almost from day 1. We were lucky in that she has always liked going to bed for the night. However, naps are a different story and we have gone in and out of phases where she was consistent and then not.

@Mrs. Bee: OH, oh, oh, for sure, I would hold off, too! Olive is still so wee...She's so cute. I sleep-trained LO so early because we were both miserable and not getting any sleep. I just had to do it.

Also, I'm really glad SOMEBODY other than me is really into routine. I just had a cow this morning because my MIL doesn't like how I have LO on a schedule and she came over today and did the three things I hate: 1) woke her up to play, 2) cradled her to sleep, and 3) told me how to parent.

SIGH.

@Rubies: i am pro sleep training, but i'm not sure when we should do it since olive is 3 months old now, 2 months adjusted. i feel more guilty sleep training her since she was born early while charlie was a big boy (sleep trained at 4 1/2 months).

i'm sure we'll do some form of sleep training down the line though!

We night and nap trained when LO was 3.5 months old and by 4.5 months, she was on a schedule and her day was very predictable.

I know how important schedules are to babies and their sleep, but I must admit that we haven't had Olive on a consistent schedule.

It's partly because when we're out and about with Charlie, she's usually sleeping which pushes her bedtime later. Anywhere between 6pm - midnight is also her witching hour, when it's hard to get her to stay asleep no matter what time we put her down (even when we put her down as early as 5:30pm). It was much easier to keep a schedule when we only had one kid!

She's 3 months now, and by this age Charlie's sleep much worse. Olive's is not as bad -- maybe because she's closer to 2 months adjusted. But we can put her in the crib awake for naps and she puts herself to sleep most of the time (we couldn't do that with Charlie).

Anyway... I know I have to get her on a consistent schedule soon because her evening mischief means I get nothing done!

When did you get your LO on a consistent schedule?
