I had Braxton Hicks for WEEKS before my due date and for two full weeks past, until I was eventually induced. I thought about going in once or twice when they were really intense, but alas - not the real thing. Good luck, and you will know when it's really the real thing... :)

@lydg: it can happen in the blink of an eye, signs or no! do not lose hope. hopefully we will both be holding our babies within a few days of our due dates! Good on you working if you can. I bet it helps with distraction. It's both a super exciting AND super frustrating time.

@mrsmccarthy thank you!! so glad you can relate. i am trying to be normal and not overreact...but people are making me a little paranoid. today was the first day of school and everyone could NOT believe I was at work.

I think that is a big part of me not wanting to go to L & D despite having some pain is getting unwanted interventions. As far as it seems, I've had no obvious signs of impending labor...grrr.

@regberadaisy I know I should be counting or timing...but I'm just not. I don't even know why I'm not! I have been extra, extra, miserable since Friday...like something has really changed. The back pain is now so bad that I can barely walk--but I'm just chalking it up to the baby shifting and it's really aggravating the sciatica I've always had.

I have a dr. appt tomorrow at 3!! I'm like "OK TOUGH IT OUT!" unless my water breaks...

When my contractions were 3-4 mins apart and I had to stop and breathe when one came.

How far apart are yours? I was uncomfortable for days before hand which I'm now convinced was early labor.

@lydg: Friends and family totally make one more antsy! I can SO relate! That said i wouldnt go in until you are pretty sure because the earlier you go in the more chance you will either be sent home or get alot of interventions that you may not have needed or wanted. I would call my doc however and ask her what she thought about what i was experiencing. Especially if you are afraid you are not gonna feel your contractions. From what i have heard they are VERY obvious for most women but there is a teeny tiny percentage of women who are less sensitive and I can understand your wanting to make sure that is not you and you wont end up in the news. Are you having any other pre labor signs? Any bloody show or anything like that?

I had contractions that were very close together, like 3-4 minutes apart, but not too painful. My ob said I could go, but I was sent home because I wasn't dilating. Next time ill wait longer.

I went in after calling when my contractions were 4-5 minutes apart, lasting at least a minute long for around two hours. I stopped contracting at the hospital, though, and hadn't progressed much, so we went home. As soon as we got home they kicked into high gear, and after two and a half hours of ridiculously painful back contractions that I could barely breathe through let alone talk through and lot of throwing up I went back (without calling) with the intention of begging them to admit me or give me something for the pain. I had progressed to 5cm and he had moved down quite a bit within that two and a half hours, and they admitted me.

I need to remember the 5-1-1. My whole deal is I have been having contractions (according to my Ob), but I just don't know it! Like @yoursilverlining I was 100% effaced and dilated at my 38 week appointment. Definitely not trying to overreact, but friends and family are making me so antsy!

@musiccav I am hoping to tough it out!!! Yes I have been extremely swollen since about 7 months and it is not getting better. BP yesterday was 118/77 which is way high for me based on my history of low BP.

Thanks for the input sweet bees!

My OB does the 5-1-1 thing too, but I went in when I started having to use coping techniques to get through the pain. At that point my contractions were coming more frequently than the 5 mins apart, but we were close to our hospital so I wasn't too worried.

I went too early and I think it's what ended up making my labor the crap tastic crap fest that it was.
Wait. You don't want to be sent home, but you also don't want to not be sent home and then end up at the hospital for days...
Get one of those contraction timers. When they are consistantly 5 minutes apart (or when you can't stand the pain), then go.

I went in when I was having the worst pain of my life. Hats what my doc told me to do and it worked. I was well dilated when I got there. I wouldn't go for cramps/not sure well. You don't want to be sent home! Wait till you feel obvious contractions that are consistent.

I went in when contractions were 3-4 mins apart..! About an hour after I started feeling labor pains.
If I remember correctly, the hospital rule is go in when water breaks or contractions are 5 mins apart for first time moms? Or was it 7?

Good luck!!!

If I was in your situation, I wouldn't go yet. I'm in the camp that wants to labor/tough it out at home as long as possible, until I get to 5-1-1 or my water breaks. Of course, my hospital is only seven minutes away.
If I remember correctly, you've been pretty swollen for a while? That's the only thing that would concern me, in case you become pre-eclamptic.

Although I ended up having a scheduled c-section at 40+2; my plan was not to go into L&D until I was having contractions that timed less than 10 minutes apart for more than 1 hour. I was very, very uncomfortable in the last week of pregnancy, and had dilated and 100% effaced by week 38, so there were some cramps....just no timed contractions, or timed/regular crampy feelings...so I never went into L&D. Hope this helps!

ETA: I also had some pre-term labor contractions that were right around 10 minutes apart, but would generally clear up at around the 1 hour mark, so I wanted to wait with real contractions until they had been going for at least an hour.

A few friends keep telling me I should go to L & D. I'm not uncomfortable (just a little crampy), pretty swollen, and over 39 weeks prego! I'm like at a 2 on the pain scale and a 5 on the annoyance of the pain scale. I have a dr. appt. on Tuesday and I'm pretty sure I can tough it out until then unless something crazy happens, like my water breaks.

Did you ever just go on up to L & D on your own? I have friends who did that and ended up getting induced that very day...and that kind of freaks me out! Of course, others would just get sent home. How did you make the decision to go if you didn't have any "major" or "obvious" signs of labor?
