The first ultrasound scan happens around 12 weeks. Doc had us come in at 8 weeks to see that things were on target because we were going on a long trip. I saw the nurse practitioner at my first vist ~8.5 weeks and I requested an u/s to "confirm" the pregnancy. She basically told me that they only do that if you are spotting or cramping and essentially told me to say I was cramping. I did and got my u/s. it was so reassuring to see that heartbeat! I was not happy about that because it aeemed late to me. When I finally got into the doctor I wanted to see, they sent me to a dating and viability u/s at 8 weeks. I would try to talk a lot about how I'm feeling super nervous & stressed about whether everything is okay/risk of miscarriage. Maybe they'll agree to an earlier one then. I was nervous it was ectopic, they told me I could come in for peace of mind or just wait it out. There was only a sac at that point but it put my mind at ease and we got to see the heartbeat the next week at 6 weeks! She didn't even tell me (on the phone) if I get an U/S at that appointment. I eventually had an early one because of spotting though. For my second pregnancy I went to a new practice and they do an early dating u/s. They normally schedule them for 6 weeks or so, but they pushed mine to 8 weeks. I'm going to push it and see if he'll give me one.. after having coffee with a friend yesterday who m/c at 12 weeks and the u/s that day showed NOTHING, she is still upset they didn't give her one at 8 weeks (it probably would have shown way behind already). It made me a bit nervous. The nurse said she can't 'know' if he'll agree to do one that day or not, so I think I'll just have to push and see what happens. Otherwise I wouldn't have gotten one until my NT scan at 13 weeks. No experience with asking to push it up, because the NP offered before I could...but it never hurts to ask!
