6 months. We started with water in a straw cup offered when she was eating solids. We started offering milk once a day when she was 8 or 9 months and by 12 months she was completely transitioned.

@birdofafeather: i'm in major denial!! I'm going to try to give J a sip of my water tonight. when he is in the bath tub he grabs the rinse cup and puts it up to his mouth like he's drinking -which I think is super cute - but now I'm like "ummm do you sort of know what you are doing mister??" I thought he was just playing around with it but part of me thinks he's catching on to what a cup is for ?!

i'm going to get a zoli to start with, I think!

i have seen the same thing! our ped recommending giving R 1-2 oz of water "to get her used to drinking something without taste" which i don't think is necessary, but the other day, i gave her a taste of my water out of a open cup and she was swallowing it! i have been reading every thread on here about cups! it looks like the zoli and thinkbaby are popular. i might get one soonish or the sippy tops for our lifefactory bottles to have her try it out.

how did our babies get here already?!

We started around 6 months and didn't use a sippy at all. We used straw cups and encouraged drinking out of open cups. When he switched to cow milk at 1 year, he drank about 8oz in a straw cup. The rest of his liquids were in an open cup. By about 14 months our LO could drink pretty well out of an open cup.

I find the Oxo tot cups to be a good size/shape for very young children. They come with a sippy attachment but my son never figured out how to use it and got used to the open cup instead.

We started offering it a little boy after we started solids... So at about 6.5 months. We tried a normal sippy and he was having trouble getting the water out so we moved to a straw sippy and he caught on right away and loves it! We use it for water and for a teeny amount of juice diluted by lots of water with dinner. We just started the little but of juice about 2 weeks ago. He's nos almost 8 months.

We offered it very soon after we started solids, and jumped straight to a straw sippy cup. I had done that thing where you suck water into a straw and then hold it in place with your finger and let it go into his mouth a few times, and he seemed to understand how to move the water so we decided to go straight to a straw cup.

We introduced the zoli cup at around 7 months and she took it really well. She drinks water from it with every solids meal.

We introduced one at 4 months. We really just let him play with it to get him used to it. We did it so early bc he never took a bottle.

@coacheswife123: we introduced it when we started solids at 6 months. LO was breastfed as well and we liked the zoli cup best of all. we only gave her water in that cup. When she was about to turn a year we introduced milk in a different cup

I was researching on Kelly Mom about introducing solids and was surprised to see the recommendation of starting a sippy as early as 4 months! I'm sure most of this is just me not being ready for my baby to be old enough to take a sippy!?!? We aren't starting solids YET but I think we will start a little earlier than 6 mo so I'm researching!

When did you start giving your LO a sippy? Did you mainly use it to offer water? What kind is best for a breastfed baby?
