I will let her play with a spoon and yogurt or whatever just to let her get used to it. It's a mess though. We started giving him utensils when he started getting independent and not wanting us to feed him so about 11 to 12 months I think. We did that and a lot of finger foods. At daycare by the time he reached the toddler room (13-14 months) they encourage utensils as often as the child is willing so he's got pretty good by 16 months or so.
