My kids are 7 and 5, and I recently asked if we can pass it onto their cousin. They both said no. They rarely play with it, and it mostly gets played with by other kids who come over for birthday parties. We've had it for 6 years, and I will be sad to see it go. We'll probably hold onto it for another year or two.

He used it from age 1.5 to 2.5 and just started hiding items in there and throwing play food / utensils / pots & pans.

With big items like that, we pack it up in the garage or ask the in-laws if they'd like it at their house (they have a playroom), and then we try reintroducing it in a couple months.

I plan to bring it back when he is 3.5 and it's summer (AKA, 110 degrees so we are stuck inside.)

@Corduroy: my 6 year old and 2 year old still play with theirs. Even if they don't play with it everyday. I placed it in her room so its part of her room decor. I expect it to be there for several more years to come

We don't have have a ton of toys but we still regularly rotate toys so there aren't as many out as much. So in my house I'd switch it out for something big (probably the two ride on toys that are in the basement to make space for the Christmas tree). If they never asked for it back in a year I'd talk to them about getting rid of it. Or just quietly make it disappear. But my 4 year old is catching on to that so I try to talk to him about stuff more now.

My DD is going on 8 and and will randomly play with it in the basement - I move toys down there to "die" LOL

I haven't pulled the plug yet but I will very soon!

We’ve had ours for going on 5 years and 2 LOs. It is rarely played with but every time I ask if I can get rid of it, the answer is no (my youngest LO is now 5). So I’m waiting.

I got my son a plastic play kitchen and it was basically used a s storage center for his cars. I was going to get rid of it when i had the idea to save it and bring it outside in the spring, and it got another season of use, surprisingly. I recycled it at the end of that summer, my son was turning 4 that year.

He still played with the play food and appliances though, glad I kept those.

@Corduroy: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: My 6 y/o niece asked for a play kitchen for Christmas, my sister told her she already had one she doesn't play with . Her answer was that it was too small. I just texted my sister to put something under it and see what happens, we never thought of that while talking about it.

LayBabyLay blogger noticed her kids weren’t using the play kitchen as much and her fix was adding pieces to the bottom to make it taller. Apparently that did the trick. Do you think it would be more fun if it grew a few inches?

... & how old were your kids?

Mine are in Kindergarten and 3.5 in FT preschool. I WOH so they don't have too much to kill inside the house. The kitchen is in our kitchen/dining area. After Christmas I realized I haven't seen them play with it for a month or so. Longer for my older one. They both prefer to help in the real kitchen. I'm tired of straightening it up and the junk we end of stacking on top. Is it time for it to go or is this just a lull in use?

Any tips on getting rid of big things that the kids will obviously notice?
