So sorry for your loss. We had to make a similar decision for our 16 year old dog in June of this year. :(

We've been having issues with my 16 year old dog, so this is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. We've been treating him for kidney failure for the last 3 years, and it seems to have gotten worse lately. He has weeks where he can't hold it and goes to the bathroom inside the house a lot. Sometimes his back legs give out, and he's immobile for a few hours. Then, just when we think the end might be around the corner, he gets better, and he walks fine and has no accidents in the house for a week or more.

I'm a little surprised to see so many people say incontinence is a sign that it's time to go. I get it, really. It's so hard to deal with never knowing when you might run into pee or poop in the house, especially with a toddler running around too. We just couldn't pull the trigger over it, because we felt guilty, like we were doing it for us rather than his comfort.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this too. I guess I'm just waiting until I know it's the right moment, when I know he's suffering too much and it's time to put an end to it...

@youboots: The anti-diarrhea meds work wonders, if you could get him some.

Do you still have our extra crate? That would be a good place for him while you're gone (not for the trip - but for your errands). It has a lip around the plastic tray that would catch any pee/poop. I'm so, so sorry! That's so hard.

@youboots: Oh poor thing! I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I would try and bring him into an emergency vet quick to be seen, and see if they can do a test on his stool before you leave on your trip.

I'm assuming you aren't going to board (based on health issues) so maybe whoever you are having watching over the dog could help you out on vet visits as well?

It sounds like something might be wrong with his stomach now. That would not explain the hiding/skittishness but maybe is a cause.

I know you're leaving but is there time for him to be seen today?

We waited probably longer than we needed to, and our vet told us for months that it was OK to consider it but we just couldn't... Our dog was 15 years old, had vertigo, fell down the stairs constantly (we carried him up and down for bedtime and going outside), and started going blind. We ended up putting him down once he couldn't walk outside to go to the bathroom anymore. He didn't even resist the shot and passes almost instantly. I kinda feel bad that we let it get to that point since he was obviously very miserable, and I would probably start the conversation earlier for our current dog (who is 10)

I just came home from being out of the house this morning to the exact same scene. I did not feed him this morning to give his tummy a break. And he peed everywhere. We have a morning flight tomorrow 😬

Well, owners usually know when it's time based on the quality of life of the pet..incontinence is usually the deal breaker as is reduced appetite or not eating at all as well as behavior. If the diarrhea is new you could always call the vets office and see if they could prescribe anti diarrheal Meds unto like your husband gets home the next you could make the decision together. Your vet won't prescribe steroids for your dogs GI upset as a previous poster mentioned, they use steroids to treat intestinal lymphoma or ibd in cats, not for dogs with GI signs.

I just want to say I'm really sorry. Also, I agree with @littlejoy about when they become incontinent.

I don't know if dogs have similar issues as cats, but I will share that we have a 14 year old cat who was going through similar issues last year (constant diarrhea, to the point where she lost almost half her weight and had trouble getting around). The vet prescribed steroids and our cat made a miraculous recovery. She is completely dependent on the steroid now unfortunately but she has regained all her lost weight and has virtually no issues now. So possibly ask the vet if anything similar could be done for a dog? I know that if the medication had not worked, we would have thought very seriously about euthanizing as both our cat's and our own quality of life was declining at that point.

@littlejoy: yeah it was really fun to clean up- M is out of town and I also have to keep T out of it. The entire downstairs smells disgusting. I'm airing it out even though it's under 50.

Ohhh, poor baby!

Honestly, when I first started reading, my response was leaning towards, "when they are incontinent" (because of old age), and then I kept reading to see that you guys are there.

Have you had blood tests done? Molly had poopsplosions last year, but it was from giardia, and she just needed meds for a week.

If the upset stomach was due to a parasite, I would treat. But, if there was no cause, and this became a pattern, I would be having that conversation. Quality of life is important for him, but also for you guys.

My first dog ever Dutch is getting older. We adopted him nearly 11 years ago and he was full grown at the time- so he's at least 13. He's a lab/Aussie/Chow mix about 65 lbs. His health has been going downhill. He seems confused and startled easier than usual. He has been getting scared and hiding in corners and refusing to go outside at least daily. Lately he has been losing his ability to hold it overnight and his tummy seems upset. He has been going poo inside more and more often. This morning I woke up to liquid poo explosion all over our dining room. He was just in for his check up Tuesday at the vet and said he is aging but fine. He's my husbands dog so it's not really up to me but I don't want to see him suffer. Is this the end or could it get better?

When did you know it was time to say goodbye.
