@artbee: Interesting! We have had a few choking/gagging scares (I'm not sure what she was doing really, but I ended up digging food out of her throat once) and so we have been really hesitant to give her much.

@skipra: Good idea! LO mostly just played with her puffs, so I stopped offering them for a while.

@oliviaoblivia: LO has started refusing solids for me, but not DH, so I have started wondering if we should start on finger foods.

@rawrasaur: I was wondering if you would respond. Your LO is such a good eater (and partially inspired this post)!

@MamaChin: Thanks! Looks like I should try puffs again.

@coastmama: Scary! Like I said, my LO has gagged several times and the whole idea of giving her more solid foods freaks me out.

@autumnlove: Haha! That makes it easy.

@kodybear: Thanks!

starting around 7 months i'd give her puffs to help her learn how to chew and to learn the pincer grasp. it took her a couple weeks but she got the hang of it around 8 months. around the same time she got sick and decided she didn't like purees anymore, so we decided to start introducing more finger foods. now at 9 months she eats all finger foods. so we started with puffs, then introduced bananas, carrots, bread, etc. she still gags probably at least once a meal. it freaks me out everytime but i think she just eats too fast sometimes.

LO's daycare teacher told me she was ready because she was stealing other LO's finger foods.

I always gave him puffs after purées to practice pincer grip and so I can wash his dishes while he is distracted. When he started complaining after a few ozs of purées but was scarfing down puffs and halved blueberries I started switching over. Now at 9.5 months he has finger foods for breakfast and dinner. I feed him his yogurt snack and he never complains about that, as if he knows there isn't a pick-up-able version of yogurt.

LO is 7.5 months and we started trying to give a few soft finger foods tonight, and he gagged and threw up. :( So we will be putting it off a little longer now.

She started demanding to eat what we were eating shortly after starting solids, so we slowly introduced items. She did an awesome job with chewing them, so we kept giving her more. The only times she has had issues was when she learned to eat from her fist (vs. fingers) and was eating too quickly. She was able to resolve it herself, though.

She started refusing spoon feeding so I offered dinner foods and she did well. No looking back.

I kept putting cheerios on his tray because he liked to play with them. Eventually he started eating them so we started with other finger foods at that point.

The doctor told us to start at 9 months.... we hadn't yet because she would gag when we did, but after the doctor gave us the go she was oddly fine.

I know there have been quite a few threads on solid foods lately, but I was wondering when everyone decided their LO was ready to have finger foods. Did you have any choking/gagging scares after you decided to go for it? What foods did you start with?
