I learned one year when I was a nanny and had to cook the family dinner.

The Mom would leave me with a recipe book indicating what she wanted me to make, and left me with all the ingredients. The kids were older, so they slept in every morning, so the first thing I would do is read all about the recipe and look up anything I didn't understand.

After one summer of making dinners for a family every evening, I could cook almost anything.

i never learned. my mom got cancer when i was in fifth grade, and she never cooked after that.

winging it has worked for me thus far. thankfully the dude's really picky, so i stick with the easy stuff.

Started learning at a young age - first dream job was caterer (to give you an idea, I wanted to be a caterer/policewoman/ballerina.) Got as good as/surpassed my mom once I was tall enough to use the back burners. REALLY started cooking once I moved in with my husband. Now I LOVE to cook. Still not a big fan of eating, and I HATE doing dishes.

My mom taught me the basics. A roommate taught me that vegetables really aren't evil. And cookbooks/online recipes/nutrition certification taught me the rest.

@MegWag: I agree. I think a lot of it is mind over matter - if you tell yourself you can't cook, you probably won't. Just takes a little practice to master the majority of cooking techniques. And make sure to taste along the way! ;)

I don't know that I ever specifically "learned" how to cook. I mean, it's not that hard... I just follow recipes and then once I get comfortable with something I can wing it more.
I don't really understand what people mean when they say they don't know how to cook. I always think that they must be making it harder than it needs to be if they think they can't do it.

I didn't learn anything until I moved into my first apartment. Before then I wasn't motivated to learn from my mother. I should have been, but I wasn't. I was a mess for the first year I'd say. Now I'm not so bad but I could of been ahead of the curve, oh well!

I learnt to cook when I was maybe 12? I ended up taking over the majority of cooking at that point, and I do nearly all the cooking now. The hubs rarely cooks unless I'm not home or really sick.

I was making full dinners for my fam (mom and dad worked and sisters weren't interested in cooking) when I was 9 years old. I learned through helping my mom and observing her.

I started cooking for my little brothers and sisters when I was 12 or 13. No one really taught me, but I kind of just taught myself after watching my mom. I moved out when I was 17, and that's when I really started cooking. Now, I LOVE TO COOK!

I would help my mom cook for holiday meals growing up. Then when I was a senior in high school I went to my grandma's once a week and she'd teach me a different recipe every week. I wanted to make sure I would be able to feed myself in college.

I learned a few staple dishes from my parents but never really cooked or attempted to cook until my husband and I got together. I say he taught me to cook, but he refuses to take credit because as soon as I just actually tried cooking, I got good, so he claims that latent skills were there all along.

I became a vegetarian when I was in 6th grade, and my mom told me that she wouldn't prepare any special meals for me. That's when I started to learn how to cook. I made my way through most of the "Vegetarian Epicure" cookbooks and then went from there. Sometime in college I started eating meat again, and since then I have slowly learned how to cook some meat. DH and I both cook together a lot, and we like trying out new skills and methods, so we have become more and more accomplished as cooks over the years.

My mom always cooked for us and I would watch. Also, I worked at a restaurant in the kitchen while I was in high school.

I didn't learn to cook until me and the DH started living together. It was just a lot of practicing. I follow a cookbook and love watching food network.

I never have been able to cook. I'm trying a little here and there now,but DH does most of the cooking. I never had to learn because we ran a restaurant growing up, so I just put an order in for lunch and dinner. People have always looked at me crazy when I say I don't know how to cook because they knew my dad was such an amazing cook.
