DD has been climbing up jungle gyms by herself, since... 18-20 months? We still stay near to her (she tells us when she needs help or gets uncomfortable with a situation) but her gross motor skills are pretty advanced, so we don't shadow her every move.

The playground we go to is designed for elementary school kids so there's lots of wider steps from high up places and little girl wants to be like the big kids so we'll be following her around till she gets a bit more sense or her legs reach.

I have seen some parents letting their year and a half kids climb up the steps to the slide and go down by themselves but their kids don't try to dive over the sides like my LO. I do sometimes let one of the big kids that we know well take her up without me but I'm watching closely.

Our playground has a really nice toddler area (for ages 2-5). Its not that high off the ground. Usually I let her climb up there and I follow her around on the ground so if she gets to any stairs/opening i am there to stop her from jumping off.

There is a big kid part of the park though and I do follow her around over there. Its not hard though because its all handicap accessible.

Awesome, now I don't feel like such a crazy helicopter parent! I've seen infants crawling around on playgrounds alone. Their parents or caregivers are right next to the playground.... but it still makes me uneasy.

I think we completely followed her around until after two.... maybe like 26 or 27 months?

The last time we went to a park was when dd was around R's age. We followed her around and will probably still follow her around until she's 3? Not sure!

LO is 21 months old and if she wants to go on the playground I follow her up there. She's still so wobbly and I picture her trying to jump off the ledge. I admit to being a helicopter parent though..... so I'd like to know when most people trust their LO's to be on a playground by themselves.
