My little girl only babbled "mama" up until 10 1/2 months when she suddenly busted out with "banana", "doggy", "moo" (for cow), and "daddy" all in one week. That was only two weeks ago and no new words since but she does seem to be having entire conversations with us in babytalk.

BTW, I do think that in general, girls learn language faster while boys excel with physical coordination.

Haha, my son only says something that sounds like "gum," he's 10 months.

We're also raising him with two languages, English spoken by me and German by my husband. I know he understands both, he responds with the correct action when we ask him to do something. I am curious to hear what his first real word is and in what language it is too!

@andrea, I wonder too.... I'm hoping it's english, but only I and the TV speak to him in english so it's most probably gonna be french.

@blushink - It does happen more or less overnight! It will be interesting to see which language he will use first? Or both equally?

@andrea my pediatrician told me it would take longer but once he started he would talk but fluently (well as fluent as a baby talks) So I'm definitely looking forward to that moment!

I also heard boys take longer to talk then girls... but i might be wrong.

18 months was the turning point for charlie. that's when his vocabulary exploded and he was able to communicate with the words he knew. it'll literally be overnight!

Are you saying it will take longer because you are raising him bilingual? I don't know anything about this so I am just asking. We are only speaking English to the LO and she started talking around 15 months. Now 3 months later she says short sentences so we know what she wants most of the time but there are still times when I don't understand the word she is trying to say!

My son is a little over 15 months, and apart from saying "Mama, Papa, Wow and Woody" he doesn't talk (so that we can understand him)

He has whole conversations (in his own language) and points to things left and right but we have no clue what he is saying. He says "pitou" (french for doggy) when he sees one, and he can bark or roar like a lion. but that's about it.

I know some kids speak much sooner, but the fact that I'm speaking to him only in english (and he understands) and my husband/family and daycare speak to him only in french (and understands) I have a feeling it will take a while.

Did you raise your child bilingual? If so, when did you start understanding them?
