For the first few months, we still used the sleep sack and then ditched it after a month or two. At 2.5 our VERY active toddler still never gets out of bed on his own. He never tried to climb out and slept really well so we never felt the urge. However, baby2 will be here soon and we wanted him out before he felt like the baby was taking over his crib. We bought a regular twin with no rails and he hasn't fallen out. And at 12 months we bought him a twin mattress for the floor. So far so good! He actually just sits up and waits for me to go get him. It was just easier for me when he was sleeping like crap to not have to hunch over the crib. Had he been a better sleeper, we probably would have kept him in his crib longer. We dismantled our crib and put her in a twin size bed around June. Like you we didn't want to buy a second crib but also wanted to make sure that DD was secure in her new bed so there wouldn't be any jealousy issues with DS being in the crib. They share a room and when we set up the crib back up (around August), we talked about how she had a big girl bed and DS would have the baby bed (crib). I really don't have much of a reason besides wanting to try out the Montessori style room plus I wanted a different crib for baby #2. He is an amazing sleeper and I am very lucky! We got him a big bed at 4. Our younger one is now in a toddler bed at 2. She's definitely more than 3/4 longer than the length of the bed. Why? And into what? A toddler bed, regular twin or full? I noticed last night that my 18month is already 3/4 the length of the crib! We're thinking we'll just transition her into a big girl bed when a second arrives so we don't have to buy a second crib.
